Food For Thought Graduation luncheon leads to 50-year marriage. LEONARD POGER Copy Editor ate Fine was fulfilling a family obligation in attending the Detroit Central High School graduation of cousin Rosalyn "Roz" (Fine) Kane in June 1953. But at a family post-com- mencement luncheon, he met Ethel Adler, his cousin's classmate and close friend. He liked what he saw. They talked at length and after the family luncheon Ethel drove him home because Nate didn't know how to drive. They soon started to date. In nvo years, they married. Fifty years later, they were guests of honor at their anniversary celebration, celebrated June 26 at Congregration B'nai Moshe. Recalling their first meeting, Ethel, then 17, said she had heard about Nate from his cousin Roz. After meeting him, she saw that "he was a nice guy and I liked him." Nate thought Ethel was "very attractive, being a redhead and all." At the time, Nate, then 21, was in his senior year at what is now Wayne State University in Detroit. Their next contact was a double date with Roz and a friend to a Detroit Red Wings' game at Olympia Stadium. Ethel stressed that Nate was very considerate in those early dating days. "Even though I was doing the driving on dates, he insisted on escorting me home in my car and then walking to his home eight blocks away so I wouldn't have to drive home alone." N Nate soon started taking lessons through a private driving school, with Ethel helping him in between lessons. The Fines' early married life was detoured by the U.S. Army a year after they married. Stationed in Arizona near the Mexican border, the Fines found they loved the area and planned to live there after his 1958 discharge. But their Detroit roots called them home and Nate resumed teaching in the Detroit Public Schools. He taught history and geography in ele- mentary school before retiring eight years ago. Ethel worked in several clerical positions for the schools before resigning to raise their two children, Carolyn and Steven, who now live in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield. In 1977, Ethel returned to work as an insurance underwriter, Ethel and Nate Fine retiring in 1998.
