JN: Is it unusual for psychiatrists to
reveal themselves as you do in the
book?
PK: This is not all that revelatory, but I
did want to indicate where I'm coming
from. When I say a certain admiration
for alienation and suffering is probably
misplaced, I want to indicate that I'm
someone who has some intimate aware-
ness of alienation .and suffering and the
cultural responses to them.

fering with depression?
PK: Absolutely. If I have patients
who are religious and it seems that
focus is going to be helpful or life-
saving for them, I certainly encour-
age them to pursue it. I've sent peo-
ple to rabbis, priests and ministers in
the course of treatment, and I have
to say I don't always get good results.
I've gotten better at winnowing my
list of those to whom I would send
patients in my community.
JN: How does somebody suffering
from depression find an appropriate
psychiatrist?
PK: By asking an internist, people
within the psychiatric community or
even neighbors. The good thing is
that most patients with depression
respond to whatever is done. A lot of
depression will respond to the
first course of psy-
chotherapy or
the first medica-
tion chosen.
After a matter of
weeks, a patient
ought to be doing
better. If the patient
is not, the psychia-
trist ought to be con-
cerned. If he or she is
not concerned, a
patient should think
about whether this is the
right person.
JN: How has Judaism influenced what
you do?
PK: Moments of
