retired teacher living in
Huntington Woods has won a
role in As You Like It, Man, the
fifth anneal summer production of the
Shakespeare in the Park series sponsored
by the Water Works Theatre Company.
Marvin Nochman, who taught
English at John Glenn High School in
Westland, is playing Adam, a household
servant who warns of impending danger
in this updated version of the romantic
comedy about feuding brothers in the
forest. Performances will run
Thursdays-Sundays, July 28-Aug. 7, at
Starr Jaycee Park in Royal Oak.
"I'm a big Shakespeare fan, and I'm
having fun working with all the young
people in this production," says
Nochman, 84, who appeared two years
ago in the outdoor presentation of
Taming of the Shrew. "Shakespeare's
plays always have lots of parts for people
of all ages."
Director Terry Carpenter, who has
worked at Meadow Brook Theatre in
Rochester, has brought the play into the
1960s lArith a cast of 20 portraying hip-
pies against so-called squares.
"It's difficult to put on authentic
Shakespeare plays because of the costs
involved," explains Nochman, who also
has performed with the Michigan
Shakespeare Festival in Jackson. "The
costumes alone would be very expen-
sive, so updating the play is very practi-
cal."
Nochman, who grew up and had his
bar mitzvah in Detroit, started working
with community theaters before retir-
ing. The drama teacher at the school
where he worked suggested the activity,
and he got some instruction at the
Purple Rose in Chelsea and Planet Ant
in Hamtramck.
Nochman has worked with the
Spotlight Players in Wayne, Rosedale
Community Players in Detroit,
Stagecrafters in Royal Oak and various
dinner theater projects. As part of the
troupes, he has done everything from
mopping floors to directing. One fun
directing assignment had to do with a
Shakespeare derivative, Paul Rudnick's I
Hate Hamlet, for the Rosedale Players.
To memorize his lines, Nochman goes
over them many times and makes con-
nections with verbal cues. The rhymes
make memorizing easier for this actor,
who is joined in Royal Oak by two
other Jewish theater buffs, Marty Smith
of Ann Arbor and Eli Magid of Detroit.
"I would encourage anyone with an
interest in theater to audition," says
Nochman, husband of champion swim-
mer Lois and a father, grandfather and
great-grandfather. "I read a lot of plays
because of my interest in community
theater." ❑
As You Like It, Man will be per-
formed Thursdays-Sundays, July
28-Aug. 7, at Starr Jaycee Park,
1101 W. 13 Mile, in Royal Oak.
Performances are 8 p.m.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7 p.m.
Sundays and 3 p.m. Saturdays,
July 30 and Aug. 6. $10-$20.
