Brent said that interviewing his
father in Europe gave the stories he
heard through the years "a richness
they didn't have before."
"It's one thing to hear someone's
memories, then see those memories in
living color," said Brent, the film's co-
executive producer with Glenn and
Robert Larsen, former station manager
of WTVS-Channel 56. "Having the
chance to work on the film gave me a
chance over the last 2 1 /2 years to really
explore these stories in greater depth."

stories we heard through the years,"
Glenn said. "With the exception of
being back in my grandparents' home,
I never found any aspect of it to be
emotional."

Throughout the war, Triest made
movies of his surroundings with a
camera he bought for a few packs of
cigarettes, Palackdharry said.
"He's photographing the devastation
— what he says is 'just retribution' —
of Germany," the filmmaker said. "He
ends up in Buchenwald. One of the
most poignant moments of the piece
is him in Buchenwald imagining what
could have happened to himself."
There's a profound emptiness there,
Palackdharry said. "The devastation
around you inhabits you. I don't think
anybody felt a welling of tears —
Howard is very controlled — but his
lip kind of quivers."
