ues-
tion:
Dear
Bar y is
iron in my diet
important and
what are the
current guide-
lines regarding the daily recom-
mended and maximum intake of
iron? Thanks, Carrie.

A

nswer: Dear Carrie, iron is

important for the produc-
tion of red blood cells that
deliver oxygen throughout the
body. A diet containing sufficient
iron helps prevent iron-deficiency-
anemia and maintains energy
levels. Also, iron helps guard
against infection and disease
_4- and promotes growth.

Iron needs vary with age.
The Dietery Reference
Intakes (DRIs, which re-
placed the former Recom-
mended Dietary Allow-
ances (RDAs)), indicate
the following daily iron
intake for males: 9-13
yrs. = 8 mg.; 14-18 yrs. =
11 mg.; over 18 yrs. = 8
mg. The DRIs indicate the
following iron intake for
women: 9-13 yrs. = 8 mg.; 14-18
yrs. = 15 mg.; 19-50 yrs. = 18 mg.;
over 50 = 8 mg.

The maximum daily intake of iron
for both men and women 9-13 yrs.
= 40 mg.; over 13 yrs. = 45 mg.

Infants, children, and pregnant
and lactating women have differ-
ent DRIs. Vegetarians may require
more iron than indicated. Specific
medical situations can vary, so it's
always wise to consult a nutrition/
health care professional.
