KERI GUTEN COHEN Story Development Editor W hen a drunk driver cut short the lives of Judy, Alex and Sam Weinstein on May 3, the loss was felt not only by their family, friends and community, but also by fellow thespians in Farmington Hills community theater. Those friends have established the Weinstein Theatre Enrichment Fund dedicated to honoring Judy, Alex and Sam by providing scholarships to young people interested in the per- forming arts. Already two scholarships have been awarded to the Farmington Hills the- ater camp. The recipients attend Dunkel Middle School and Hillside Elementary School, where Alex and Sam were Farmington Public Schools students. The goal of the WTEFund is to share the Weinsteins' love of theater by providing positive exposure to live the- ater and the arts, and by enabling chil- dren to learn, attend and perform in all aspects of performance theater. The fund will encourage children to take a step into the arts just as Alex and Sam were inspired. Eventually, fund organ- izers hope to build the Weinstein Theatre. Fund-raising will be accomplished through donations and sales of pur- ple "Choose Responsibility" wrist- bands. On the reverse are the names of Judy, Alex and Sam. The group also is selling silver key chains with charms that have birthstones of the crash victims and the words "live, love, laugh." Volunteers began selling the bands at the Farmington/Farmington Hills Founders Day event July 15-16. To date, they've raised about 53,000. Plans call for making the wristbands and key chains available in schools in the fall and at upcoming fund-raisers and retail locations to be announced. "Each person who wears this band makes a commitment to them- selves and their community to be accountable for their actions." Board members of the fund are friends of the Weinstein family who met through Sky's The Limit Productions in Farmington Hills. Gary Weinstein, who lost his wife and children in the accident, is on the board. He and his sons performed together in The Wonderful World of Oz in April.
