Star Struck

MSU Hillel stuff toy
bears with starry wishes
to help ailing kids.

An Alyn patient with a cuddly friend
from East Lansing

East Lansing
ichigan State University
students made 20 stuffed
animals to brighten the
lives of kids in rehab at Alyn Hospital
in Jerusalem. Inside each bear was a
student wish for the recipient.
"The wish was in the shape of a
star," said Rachel Zoe Zuckman, a
2005 MSU graduate and MSU Hillel's
KOACH intern, a student position
through the United Synagogue for
Conservative Judaism.
"We kissed the star, put it inside and
stuffed the toys for the children in the
Active Rehabilitation Ward at Alyn,"
said Zuckman, of Farmington Hills.
Metro Detroit project participants
included 2005 graduates Ellery Diem
of Farmington Hills and Stacey Wolf
of West Bloomfield, seniors Danielle
David and Audrey Bloomberg, both
of Farmington Hills, and Jodi Beals of
West Bloomfield, and juniors Jordan
Weiss and Jamie Iden, both of West
Bloomfield.
This April social action program was
themed, "Build a bear because you are
with KOACH."
Great Lakes Bear Factory in
Okemos supplied the bears.
The next part was getting the bears
to Israel. Paula Glazier of Bloomfield
Hills happened to be headed there so
she personally delivered them.
"On behalf of the children," Alyn
spokeswoman Brenda Hirsch wrote to
Zuckman, an enormous 'thank you'
to you and all the students who were
involved in this special 'from the heart'
project."
Hirsch added, "Know that these
cuddly animals will be bringing lots
more smiles to lots more faces of our
truly special little patients." D
