Champ Is Crowned

Strausz wins national senior champioinship.

Loyd Strausz is no stranger to winning table
tennis tides.
Playing the game for 75 of his 87 years, the
West Bloomfield resident recently won the gold
medal at the National Senior Olympic Games, held
at the University of Pittsburgh.
Strausz won the championship following nine
round-robin matches. Some 300 men and women 50
years and older competed.
He advanced to the national tournament by win-
ning the Michigan title, his third.
Strausz said the sport is good exercise for all ages.
He lives independently, but plays table tennis several
- times a week at the home of his daughter, Jo Rosen.

Dr. Barbara (Herzig) and Dr. Howard
Belkin of Grosse Pointe Shores
announce the birth of their daughter,
Stephanie Frances (Sarah Esther).
Stephanie was welcomed home by her

He had his own table for many years, but donated
it to Birmingham Covington School in Bloomfield
Hills when his grandson, Zachary Rosen, was a stu-
dent there.
Strausz said his family is "thrilled beyond words" at
his accomplishment. Cheering him on during the
tournament in Pittsburgh were daughter Jo, son
Richard of Southfield, grandson Zachary, and niece
Katie Triest of Huntington Woods.
His son, daughter and grandson also play table ten-
nis and Zachary, now 21, "beats me to a pulp."
Strausz began playing when he was 12 and a mem-
ber of the Chicago Hyde Park YMCA. During World

from 1942 to 1946.
In recent years, he exercises four times a week at
the Jewish Community Center's health and fitness
club, doing calisthenics and using the stationary bike
and weight machines.
He admits he now has problems walking but he
can stand for hours at a time during competition.
Strausz is a retired officer of a smelting company,
moving to the Detroit area from Chicago in 1961. ❑

formerly of Bloomfield Hills and the
late Leonard Grushko. He makes I.W.
Marks and wife, Shelly Ann, and the
late Diane Marks, also of Houston,

Hebrew name are in loving memory of
his paternal grandmother Diane
Marks, who was named for her grand-
father Will, and his maternal grandfa-

Children's Hospital Research Center.
She also volunteered as a runner dur-
ing Skate Detroit and helped at
Temple Israel's camp during the sum-
mer.
