cence.
In its one year, Seldom Blues has
achieved numerous high marks of
notable distinction ... Award of
Excellence from Wine Spectator maga-
zine, USA Today calling it one of the
notable players" of new restaurant
openings in 2004, National Geographic
Traveler noting it as an upscale supper
club that has played a major role as
part of Detroit's downtown waterfront
rebirth, Detroit Free Press naming it
one of its Top Ten Tables of 2005, etc.
The 15,000-square-foot Seldom
Blues Jazz Restaurant and Supper Club
is such that people can walk directly
into the restaurant from its in front
valet parking ... and enjoy a friendly,
relaxing experience.
Since its 2004 opening by highly
popular Frank Taylor, whose 20-year
hospitality and restaurant experience
and sartorial elegance strikingly befit
his tide as CEO and president, Seldom
Blues has achieved more than what
most restaurants hope to accomplish
in a much longer period of longevity.
In it's one-year existence, Frank, and
his partners, acclaimed Executive Chef
Jerry Nottage, Robert Porcher, fine
retired defensive end for the Detroit
Lions, and internationally noted jazz
musician Alexander Zonjic, have cer-
tainly succeeded in making Seldom
Blues a highly praised proven leader in
puttinge Detroit back on the fine din-
ing and entertainment map again.
FIRST THING I did after recently
returning from California was to look
up my 1937 yearbook from Corn-
merce High School.
Again, I had to check to see if the
guys and gals were so much different
than they are today ... And again I got
the same answer ... They sure were!
And quite a big difference! ... Not
that my old classmates of high school
days gone by weren't good-looking in
their own way, but today's young folks
sure are beautiful.
I had attended the graduation cere-
monies of grandson Matt Raskin from
Tesoro High in Orange County's Las
Flores, Calif, with around 600 cap 'n'
gowners in festivities that filled almost
three-quarters of the football field on
which they were held ... A striking
sight against the background of pictur-
esque mountains ... and proud parents
holding up signs in the stands like,
"Way To Go, Joe!" and 'You Did It,
Mary!"
The coolness, threat of rain and
what someone said was a slight earth-
. quake tremor, didn't hold back the
enthusiasm of grads, parents and
friends, as confetti and balloons filled
"
the air.
Spending Father's Day week with
son Scott and daughter-in-law Bonnie
in Coto de Caza, brought much joy ...
and one of the best pieces of halibut
I've had in many days ... The halibut
prepared by Executive Chef Marc
Cohen at the Opah restaurant in
Rancho Santa Margarita, encrusted
with hazelnuts, is its biggest seller with
good reason.
Chef Marc is a Baltimore-raised gent
whose seafood prowess combines with
other culinary talents that have given
him the distinction of being among
Orange County's finest chefs.
By the way, the name Opah has no
relationship with the Greek Opa! ... It
is the name of the Hawaiian moonfish.
Garlic lovers here like Dee Shapiro
and so many others, would go gaga if
the Garlic Jo's chain ever came to this
area ... Cajun, Asian, garlic pizza, etc.
... even desserts, with the Garlic Jo's in
Corona del Mar selling garlic ice
cream and garlic tiramisu faster than
they can be made. .
`KOSHER TODAY' magazine tells
of a CNBC report saying that
American tastebuds are changing ...
The network lists the top 10 foods
that Americans prefer ... "Ethnic foods
and varieties of traditional foods are
amongst the leaders, but number two
was pastrami. It seems that Americans
covet the pastrami on club, with the
only question remaining who makes
the best pastrami sandwich."
MAIL DEPT. ... "Hello to all our
friends back in the Detroit area. Helen
and I have been married 63 years. She
is the kid sister of the late former State
Sen. Joe Forbes. I still play golf, have
five holes-in-one, and bowl twice a
week with Helen." ... Sam Weiner,
Coconut Creek, Fla.
"To answer your question, I have
never had a mustard omelet. The word
`mustard' turns me on since my
youngest son, who is a regional man-
ager for Chartwells Food Service as
well as being an executive chef in his
own right, found the Mustard
Museum while researching a recipe for
a private party. Out of curiosity, who is
Norman K.? I went to Central High
School and Hebrew school with a
Norman Katz who is an attorney in
Detroit. I haven't seen him for years.
I'll understand if you can't divulge
your source." Willard Posen,
Farmington Hills.
