BEACH BEAUTIES

Born in 1919, Lester Johnson came
to New York City in the 1950s; it was
there he reached maturity as a figura-
tive painter. Ever since, he has explored
the vibrancy of the human figure alone
and in a crowd.
Johnson's "Beach Series — East
Hampton" continues this tradition.
Complex compositions, a sense of sen-
sual urgency and generously applied
paint in rich, appealing colors cele-

brace both youth and the pleasures of
summer.
The artist's work can be found in
many renowned institutions, includ-
t ing the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
the Guggenheim Museum and the
Whitney Museum in New York; the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; the
Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture
Garden in Washington, D.C.; and the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
"Beach Series — East Hampton:
Paintings and Works on Paper" will be
on view at the David Klein Gallery,
163 Townsend, in Birmingham
through Sept. 3. Hours are 11 a.m.-
5:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. (248)
