You need something
sweet and you need it
now. You need it gooey
and chocolately and rich.
Mrs. Freshley's Creme-
Filled Chocolate Cupcake
is just the thing. This is
junk food at its finest. It's also
kosher (OU) and dairy and hard to
find.
But we're going to be nice and tell
you just where you can get Mrs.
Freshley's cupcakes (and many other
Mrs. Freshley's desserts, most of which
are OU). Just take a look at Hiller's
Markets in West Bloomfield, Berkley
and Ann Arbor.
Now it's time for a little something
healthy. Bolthouse Farms offers a very
good-for-you collection of beverages.
"Packed with Phytonutrients" the bot-
tles boast. Sold at health-food stores,
the Bolthouse Farms drinks come in
flavors like Green Goodness, which
has a lot of things that might
sound terrifying on their
own, but come together
pleasantly enough.
Most of the flavors start
out with some base of fruit
juice, then add everything
from Jerusalem artichoke to
spinach, barley grass, wheat
grass and blue green algae
("powerful nutrients," in the
words of Bolthouse Farms).
Bolthouse Farms juices are very
thick (this is not a beverage for
wimps) and certified kosher by the
Orthodox Union.
The Holiday Market in Royal Oak
is the kind of store that actually has
devotees. Why? Well, it's a cool place
to shop, for one. There's stuff there
you won't see anywhere else (including
some kosher items) and workers are
terrifically helpful (they'll actually
check your egg carton before bagging
it, then go get you a fresh box if any
of the eggs are broken).
The owner is
Catholic and,
let's be honest:
not that many
Jews live in
Royal Oak, but
he's still got a
kosher-food
section.
The most
interesting
kosher foods,
however, are
found in the
drink
section.
Though
water doesn't
require a heksher,
you won't be able to resist all
the awesome waters here with an
OU.
There's Voss Water, from Norway,
in a glass bottle; Fiji Water, also OU
and a favorite of celebrities like
Jennifer Aniston; and Pellegrino
Water from Italy, which is OU certi-
fied.
And check out the Lurisia Natural
Spring Water from Italy, which has an
irresistible, very vintage-looking label
showing a man finding water in some
deep spring. It is certified parve with a
Kaf-k heksher.
While in Holiday Market, don't
miss the black caviar from England,
which bears the unusual but reliable
LBD (London Beit Din) heksher.
