geared toward school-age children and
their families, There are also age-
appropriate musical instruments avail-
able for the kids to enjoy during the
services, such as maracas, bongos, tam-
bourines and shakers and we encour-
age the kids to sing, march and dance
around."
The half-hour-long service, at
Shaarey Zedek's Irving and Beverly
Laker Education and Youth Complex
in West Bloomfield, is followed by a
family style buffet dinner. "Families sit
on blankets, on the grass or at tables,"
Rabbi Berkun said. "After dinner, they
play games on the fields, swing on the
swings or play on the jungle gym."
Facilitated by the synagogue's Jewish
Experiences For Families educators,
Barbara Dworin and Helayne Shaw, as
well as Shaarey Zedek's program direc-
tor, Tobye Bello, the service is typically
attended by 200-300 individuals.
The second musical service of the
summer will be All-Star Shabbat on

July 8 at Shaarey Zedek Southfield. It
will have a baseball theme in honor of
the All-Star game coming to town,
Rabbi Berkun said. It will include
baseball acitivites and a ballpark din-
ner and treats, and is sponsored by
Shaarey Zedek member Etta Solway of
Bloomfield Hills.
"It is beautiful to watch families
enjoying Shabbat together, outside
together with nature, as the sun is set-
ting on Friday night," Rabbi Berkun
said. "It is a wonderful, warm, and
positive way to introduce Shabbat to
our young families during this time of
year. It is almost like being. at camp
together, even for just one night." ❑
