Board Sets Policy
As members of Jewish Community
Council's board of directors, we
would like to take issue with some of
the statements in the letter "A
Troubling Appearance" (June 30, page
6).
When the letter refers to the process
for bringing issues to the board, this
policy is for new issues, not for those
for which we already have determined
a position. It is the responsibility of a
board of directors to set policy for
management to carry out; it is not the
job of a board to micro-manage.
The board had previously passed a
detailed action plan based on our mis-
sion that was thoroughly discussed at
the time. One of the major reasons
that the resolution on terrorism
brought to the board by letter writer
and board member Linda Stulberg
was rejected was because we already
had a policy and the Jewish
Community Council regularly
responded to such acts when appro-
priate.
We believe Executive Director
David Gad-Harf appropriately repre-
sented the Jewish Community
Council when he spoke at a rally in
Dearborn on June 10 condemning
instances of alleged desecration of the
Koran by U.S. military personnel.
Mr. Gad Harf"s words support
what most Jewish Americans believe,
and that is that Americans should sin-
gle out no religion for persecution.
His words demonstrate the strength of
the Jewish community's willingness to
speak out against prejudice of any
kind. His actions set the example for
other religious communities to follow.

No Friend Of Jews
Your newspaper reported that David
Gad-Harf, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council, stood on
the steps of a mosque and spoke at a
rally "condemning instances of alleged
desecration of the Koran by U.S. mili-
tary personnel" ("United Voice," June
16, page 25).
While the willful destruction of any
faith's holy books, sacred utensils, or
houses of worship requires people of
conscience to speak out, Mr. Gad-
Harf failed to do his homework on
the person he shared the stage with,
Imam Hassan Qazwini of the Islamic
Center of America.
Recent reports suggest that Imam
Qazwini is no friend of the Jews: The
Boston Globe, covering a lecture by
Qazwini at the University of
Michigan-Dearborn, reported that
Qazwini urged students to vote to
persuade the U.S. government to
reduce its support for Israel."
According to Campus Watch,
Qazwini is a follower of Shirazi
Shiism, whose ayatollah repeatedly
relies on the Protocols of the Elders of
Zion to demonize Jews.
WorldNetDaily reported that
Qazwini invited notorious Jew-hater
Louis Farrakhan to speak at his
mosque and reportedly cheered when
Farrakhan denounced Jews as "forces
of evil."
If Mr. Gad-Harf wanted to
announce to the world how open-
minded the Jewish community is
about other cultures, it would have
been wiser to pick a \different forum.

A Positive Example
The letter "A Troubling
Appearance" (June 30, page 7) is so
off base. David Gad-Harf is one of
the most thoughtful and efficient pro-
fessionals in our Detroit Jewish com-
munity.
As a past board member of Council,
I was so happy when David arrived in
Detroit. His efforts in the non-Jewish
community have strengthened us and
allowed us to communicate with our
neighbors.
Good luck, David. I will miss you.
