"Several of our patients have said that the ultrasound image of the new baby resembles the child they already have," said Dr. Alvin Schoenberger, also of Women's Health Consultants. Amanda and Seth Tompkins of West Bloomfield were among the first parents to have a 4D ultrasound when Amanda was pregnant with their old- est son, Josh, now 20 months. Their home video library includes both pre- and post-partum footage of both of their sons. "We had an ultrasound done with Josh at 32 weeks because he was measuring small," said Amanda. "The features we saw then are the same ones he has now; big cheeks, full lips, a little nose." "It was a very neat experience," said Seth, during the ultrasound for their second baby," and it's always exciting to see what your child is going to look like." "This has been especially great for the fathers," said Dr. Emery. "Seeing so much detail provides reality, and it adds a certain comfort level." Ashley and Jordan Broad of West Bloomfield saw a strong resem- blance between the image portrayed in the ultrasound and their newborn son, Evan. "One of the pictures looked exact- ly like him," said Ashley, "and it was an unbelievable experience to see him before he was actually here. It made everything more real." "We refuse those requests, unless there is a medical necessity. It is important to remember that this is a medical device used to make medical diag- noses and decisions." He added that there are also many potential gynecological applications for the 4D ultrasound, since it is a non- invasive way to obtain detailed infor- mation about a variety of conditions. "If I had to pick one technological development that's most changed the way we practice obstetrics, it would be the ultrasound," said Dr. Emery "The 4D technology just takes it to another level. It's really enhanced patient satisfaction; we've had a tremendous response. Every patient who has had the procedure tells us it's absolutely thrilling." ❑ More information on the ultrasound tech- nique can be found on the clinic's Web site whcobgyn.com/ultrasound i. html. 6718-B Orchard Lake Rd.
