Big Daddy's Parthenon on Orchard
Lake Road in West Bloomfield won't be
until sometime in July, hopefully ...
Owner Craig Dilworth, former boss-
man at Ocean Grille in Birmingham,
says his new spot will be well worth the
wait.
BIG ANNIVERSARY celebration
of Rose Guttman's 55 years cooking in
the deli business begins tomorrow for
nine days ... Friday, July 8, through
Saturday, July 16 ... at Sky Deli,
Orchard Lake Road, between 13 and
14 Mile roads, Farmington Hills ...
Rose's excellent home-made items like
roast brisket of beef, chicken paprikas
and stuffed cabbage, among others,
will be featured with rollback prices ...
Complete dinner specials will all be
$7.95, and include potato, vegetable
and Rose's homemade brownies or
sour cream cake ... Her fine gefilte fish
appetizer will be $3.9 5 .
CLOSING DEPT ... Restaurant
chains may have many more staying-
power dollars than most independents,
but they sure are not exempt from
locking their doors ... Latest examples
are Chili's and Macaroni Grill on
Northwestern Highway in Farmington
Hills.
IT'S EXPECTANTLY slated to
open sometime in August ... the new
little delicatessen by Stan Snitz and
Bob Fenkell ... Name will be Stan's
Deli, with just three tables and 12
seats plus curbside and inside carry-
out and tray catering ... on
Woodward, one block south of 14
Mile Road, in Royal Oak.
AH, A GREAT bowl of chilled
cucumber soup on the warm, balmy
days we've been having ... and few bet-
ter than the one being served at
Jeremy on Cass Lake Road in Keego
Harbor ... It's the secret concoction of
Executive Chef Jeremy Grandon, co-
owner with wife Paula.
Jeremy Restaurant, by the way, is
getting a lot of attention with being
open Sundays now ... 5:30 to 9 p.m.
... and will no doubt draw even more
when its new 25-person patio is
opened this summer.
WASTED TALENT Dept. ... One
of this area's best tableside dining chefs
is not preparing his excellent special-
ties ... The ability in this field of
Robert Kimoto, one of the prep cooks
at the new Katana Nu-Asian
Steakhouse in Royal Oak, is strangely
not being utilized ... His Caesar salad,
steak Diane, etc., throughout the years
have been huge restaurant standouts.
AMONG THE BIG favorites at the
coming 13th annual "Summertime in
Michigan" food festival by all Kruse

and Muer restaurants ... July 12
through Aug. 31 ... will be that deli-
cious garden gazpacho made from
scratch daily with tomatoes, bell pep-
pers, onions and cucumbers ... along
with grilled salmon and apricot salad,
artichoke-encrusted salmon, lime apri-
cot chicken, etc.
CONGRATS ... to Alisa Weintraub
on her 40th birthday, celebrated with
table for eight at Sposita's Italian
Ristorante on 14 Mile in Farmington
Hills.
SEEING PEOPLE Dept. ... He
made a strikingly imposing figure ...
sitting or standing in his tuxedo and
top hat as master of Perfection
Masonic Lodge back in the 1950s ...
Today, Max Schwartz still maintains
his sartorial elegance, enjoying the
years that have been good to him.
SMALL WORLD Dept. ... From
Gail Shapiro, Laguna Woods, Calif. ...
"I recently met some former
Detroiters and discovered that one of
them, Helen Kern, worked for my
Uncle Sol Chicorel at his Town and
Country Furniture on Telegraph and
Long Lake Road in Bloomfield Hills.
Also for David Sklar of Colony
Interiors, when it was on Coolidge
and Maple in Troy, where I bought my
first household furniture in 1970,
before it moved to West Bloomfield.
"Her sister, Mimi Hozman, used to
own Gateway Travel, and sold it to
Rochelle Lieberman in the 1980s. I
sold my Summit Travel to the same
Rochelle Lieberman in 1998.
"Helen's husband, Sam Kern, is the
former owner of Hot Sam's in Detroit,
which they left in 1982. Both now live
in my neighborhood at the senior
community of people over 55 here in
Laguna Woods."
SHE ALWAYS was a gal with plenty
of rhythm ... Now wonderful
songstress Ortheia Barnes (Rev. Dr.
Ortheia Barnes Kennedy) is putting
her over 40 years of rhythmizing into
becoming a member of the Detroit
City Council ... Detroit, at one time,
used to run with a lot of rhythmic
order ... back in the "good ol' days" of
Hastings, Brady, 12th, Linwood,
Dexter, etc., in their prime ... And I
don't mean the kind of rhythm that
folks got from Motown Records on
Grand Boulevard.
But just being an excellent song bird
isn't enough, which is why a lot of
guys and gals are glad to know that
Ortheia has another side, too ... She
does a lot of work with March of
Dimes, Focus Hope, feeding and
clothing unfortunates, and is former
legislative director for the Detroit City
