the John Kerry-John Edwards ticket.
To raise attention to her concerns,
King went so far as to plaster her
www.caroleking.com Web site with
sharp, political barbs such as "George
W. Bush has failed us on every level ...
When people say, Don't change horses
in the middle of a stream,' I respond,
`You do if the horse has no legs.'"
More persuasively, King drummed
strongly for voter turnout: "Whatever
your gender, age or other social or eco-
nomic identification, you may think
you have no interest in politics, but
politics is in your living room," she
stressed.
"Politics is in your living room if
you don't have health care. Politics is
in your living room if you or your
child can't afford to go to college.
Politics is in your living room if you've
lost your job, or if you're wondering if
you'll be able to pay off your student
loan, or if you are or have a loved one
in Iraq, or if you're just plain tired of
living in fear.
"Take charge of what happens in
your living room, your community,
your country and the world," King
urged. "Voting is not just a right, it's
an opportunity."
Now looking ahead, King's "The
Living Room 2005 Tour" intends to
give fans a rare opportunity to enjoy
her singing and her music, reintegrat-
ed with verve and a blissful bouquet of
summer nostalgia.
Not that it's a comeback. King elect-
ed to give up live performances in the
`90s and only occasionally made
albums.
Her last studio album, Love Makes
the World, co-produced by Carol Bayer
Sager (formerly Mrs. Burt Bacharach)
and issued in 2001, was a critically
lauded, near-perfect collection of
newer songs and a welcomed artistic
return to basics.
Fundamentally, King believes, a
good song is a good marriage of
melody and lyrics that say something,
but she confides that the source for
her musical inspiration goes deeper.
"We don't do things alone," she has
said. "I believe in something. I don't
know if I call it God, or what I'd call
it, but when I write, something is
there besides me."
