Fisher Music Center hosts a brand-new "Summer in the City" series this season, featuring a diverse lineup of acts and events. The series launches 8 p.m. Thursday, July 7, with Summer Poetry @ The Max, featuring Jamaal "Versiz" May, one of Detroit's most acclaimed spoken-word artists, followed by an open mic. On Friday, July 8, the series contin- ues with the first presentation of the WDET Summer Jazz Club @The Max; the series will focus on today's hottest emerging jazz acts. Performances take place at 8 and 10 p.m. Performing this Friday is the Jeremy Kittel Jazz Quintet, on a double bill with the Sean Jones Quintet. The Kittel quintet, comprising University of Michigan students and alumni, features Kittel, 20, a Celtic fiddler and the first recipient of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin, crafted by Jonathan Cooper of Maine, for exceptional musicianship. Joining him are bassist Andrew Kratzat, pianist John Nam, saxophonist Dann Friedmann and drummer Chad Hochberg. All performances take place at the Music Box at The Max, which fea- tures cabaret seating as well as food and beverage service. On performance nights, the Max will offer its first-ever Happy Hours, beginning at 5 p.m.; sidewalk chairs and tables will grace the front of the block-long music cen- ter on Woodward, providing al fresco dining and full bar service. Tickets for Summer Poetry @ The Max are $10. Tickets for WDET Summer Jazz Club @ the Max are $25. Tickets can be purchased at the Max M.
