TEMPLE BETH EL'S
ANNUAL SENIOR CONCERT
SUNDAY, JULY 17 - 3:00 PM
While Israeli politicians grapple with
terror and its effects, the JNF is in a
unique position to gaze over the hori-
zon, to think about what the Negev is
going to be in 10 or 20 years, Lis said.
"To reclaim the Negev," he said, "is
to make it truly part of Eretz Yisrael. It's
not just a nice thing to do. It's the
essence of our survival. The future of
Israel really lies in reclaiming the Negev
and to a lesser extent the Galilee."
General Dayan thanked Jewish
Detroit for being a partner with Israel.
"Jewish education in Israel is a Jewish
matter, not a matter only for Israelis,"
he said. "And the struggle of your Jim
Hiller in stocking Israeli-made prod-
ucts [in Hiller's Supermarkets] should
be an Israeli concern, not just a local
Jewish community concern."
Dany Saar of West Bloomfield, born
on an Israeli kibbutz, came to the U.S.
in 1977 as an Indiana University grad-
uate student. He echoed Dayan's call to
cultivate cohesiveness among Israelis.
"Their differences are creating too
deep of a gap between the various
socioeconomic groups," Saar said. "We
have a major tear between the secular
and the ultra-Orthodox population. So
it is very hard to get a wide consensus
on many critical issues, including the
disengagement."
Saar added, "This jeopardizes the
well-being as well as the existence of
Israel. In the past, one of the strongest
glues that united our people was fight-
ing the enemy. It seems, now, we are
too busy engaging in self-destruction.
"Israel needs exceptional leadership
to bring us all together for the better-
ment of the Jewish people." ❑

The Charge
American stockholders in companies
that do business with the Israeli
army are aiding in the persecution
of Palestinians.
The Answer
Israel's army is defensive and takes
great care in protecting civilian lives
during military operations.
American military aid to Israel helps
the Jewish state defend itself against
hostile neighbors and strengthens
Israel so it can take risks for peace.
