Cantor Najman Retiring
After 26 years at
Congregation
Shaarey Zedek,
Cantor Chaim
Najman has
announced he
will begin a year-
long sabbatical,
to be followed by
a July 2006
retirement when
Cantor Najman
he will become
cantor emeritus of the synagogue.
In a letter written to the Shaarey
Zedek membership on June 27,
Cantor Najman wrote: "It has been
my great privilege to serve you as your
shaliach tzibbur (prayer leader). It has
afforded me opportunities to grow
and to learn; to create and to inno-
vate; to direct and to teach."
Immediate plans are for the cantor
and his wife, Dr. Sherrell Najman, to
spent a year in Israel, where he plans
to devote time to study.
Upon their return the Najmans will
continue to live in Michigan, "yet
visit our children and grandchildren
on a regular basis," Cantor Najman
wrote in the letter.
Coinciding with the announcement
comes the July 1 start of Shaarey
Zedek's new cantor, Meir Finkelstein.
"Cantor Finkelstein brings many
fine qualities to his new position and
will undoubtedly be an outstanding
asset to the synagogue," Cantor
Najman wrote.
Friendship Caravan Set
The Tzofim Friendship Caravan, a
group of Israeli boys and girls, will
perform at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield at 7:30
p.m. Wednesday, July 13. The pro-
gram is free and will be outdoors,
weather permitting.
Sponsored by the Friends of Israel
Scouts, the Tzofim Friendship
Caravan is part of a larger delegation
of Israel Scouts who, each summer,
represent their homeland at camps
and in communities across North
America. The 10 members of the car-
avan, all 16 and 17, perform in
Hebrew and English, bringing Israeli
culture to the stage through interac-
tive musical programs.
For information about this pro-
gram, call Andy Roisman, (248)
432-5578.
