Combining 2 Loves Sarah's mitzvah projects help animals, Israeli school. LEONARD POGER Coll Editor S arah Richard likes to help animals and kids. She had a chance to do both as part of her bat mitz- vah projects. In one instance, she volunteers for the Silver Lake Animal Rescue League. In the other, Sarah solicited contributions of school supplies for a school near Jerusalem, which she and her family will visit in July as part of a two-week trip to Israel. Sarah, who marked her 13th birthday on June 24, celebrated her bat mitzvah May 27 at Temple Emanu- El in Oak Park. She is the daughter of Karen and Jay Richard of Oak Park. Sarah has always wanted to help animals and might be a veterinarian some day. A second career choice is to be a teacher. Owner of an adopted cat, named Pepper, since she was in the first grade, Sarah has worked for the past nine months for the Waterford Township-based Silver lake Animal Rescue League, handling a variety of June 17 Kristyn (Perlman) and Brad Kaplan of Chicago are very happy to announce the birth of their daughter, Alexis Howard. The organization accepts small animals and places them with foster families. Sarah's love of animals is a family affair. Her mother and grandmother are involved in dog shows. Mrs. Richard said the family got the idea of helping an Israeli school through contacts with the Youth Aliyah organization in Israel. With help from Hebrew school classmate Avery Drongowski, Sarah organized a campaign to have school supplies donated at the May 27 Shabbat service. Family and friends also contributed to the five boxes of school supplies for the Kiryat Yearim village school. The Richard family will deliver the boxes of crayons, markers, rulers, pens, paper, scissors and other school supplies during their visit next month. Sarah recently completed the seventh grade at Norup Middle School in the Berkley School District, where she is an honor student and member of its vol- leyball team. She is the daughter of Nance Rosen and the late Lester Lemberger and the sister of Logan and Jake. Her grandparents are Al Rosen of Farmington Hills and the late Shirley (Suzanne) RoSen.
