of Doolin, often referred to as the capi-
tal of Irish traditional music ... and
thus the name here.
It is open seven days a week, 11 a.m.-
2 a.m. ... lunch and dinner ... Sunday
brunch is 11 a.m.-2 p.m., after which
items from the regular menu may be
ordered.
Weekly entertainment includes per-
formances by Irish bands like Pat Dunn
and the Gaels ... Dunn, by the way,
formerly a Jesuit priest known as Father
Dunn, also is previous owner of the
Four Green Fields in Royal Oak.
The noted boxties that originated in
rural Ireland as a sort of hearty one-
plate meal, is among the favorite
entrees at Gus O'Connor's ... A boxty is
a lightly seasoned, potato pancake
(thinner and larger in circumference
than a latke) cooked on a griddle and
filled with a variety of ingredients.
Steak boxty has grilled steak, sauteed
mushrooms and onions stuffed in a
potato pancake and covered in a
creamy whiskey garlic sauce ... Corned
beef and cabbage boxty has slow-
cooked corned beef brisket with buttery
cabbage rolled up and covered in a
creamy horseradish-style sauce ...
There's also a salmon boxty, grilled
chicken and cheddar cheese boxty and
vegetable boxy.
Gus O'Connor's Public House pres-
ents a true Irish pub experience ...
much unlike corporate-owned chains
or Irish-Chemed restaurants ... The
handcrafted building, furnishings and
live Irish entertainment, real Irish fare
and thick Gaelic accents of employees
add much to an authenticity that
brings relaxed periods of gracious
enjoyment.
Soccer fans take heart ... Of course,
the English Premier League football
games are broadcast on plasma televi-
sions throughout the pub.
Another Gus O'Connor's with like
features has also been opened by Ed
and Mark in Rochester.
GREEKTOWN DETROIT regular
for years, Greek food maven Arlene
Greer, is loving every minute of her
vocational transition as a popular hos-
pital stalwart ... The former owner of
Valentina women's fuller-figure clothing
favorite and head of the fuller-size
departments at Saks and Jacobson's is
now a well-liked clinical service repre-
sentative at Henry Ford Hospital in
West Bloomfield ... floating as recep-
tionist of about eight various depart-
ments at the fine health center.
REUNION DEPT ... 50th by

MAIL DEPT ... "A short while back,
you had a question in your column
from a Norman K. asking where he
could find a mustard omelet. I assume
he is a mustard maven, so I have
enclosed a catalogue from the 'Mustard
Museum' in Wisconsin. It was estab-
lished by former Chicago attorney Barry
Levinson, also a mustard aficionado.
"A good number of his mustards are
kosher. I have given some of his pack-
ages as gifts for Chanukah and
Christmas." ... Willard Posen,
Farmington Hills.

(It was in the column's Question
Answer Dept., with Norman asking if it
is so odd that he loves mustard omelets
because his wife calls him a strange eater.
Do you love mustard omelets, too, Willard?)
"I kind of thought that there was a
taste difference between the two kosher
hot dogs sold at Costco and Sam's
Club. But there is also a slight problem.
I spoke to the Todzhkar Rabbi' and he
said, Na cest bezizos. 'This means they
ain't kosher, but they're a cheap lunch
and a great way to get mustard all over
your shirt.
"You also wrote of Rose Guttman
now at Sky Deli. She was with her hus-
band in Hamtramck the summer that I
worked for my cousin Manny Lax at
his window plant. The best part about
going to work there every day was hav-
ing lunch with Rose. The job drove me
right to law school; but for Rose's food,
I would return daily. I find it amazing
that she is still working since the restau-
rant in Hamtramck closed 40 years
ago. She outlasted Manny.
"Well, I can finally report that the
snowbirds are back in Detroit and
points elsewhere. The migration began
with the chief rabbi of Florida intoning
the famous words, 'When the snow is
gone the matzahs will be gone."'
Stanley Rosenberg, Ventura, Fla.
(When originally packaged, the hot
dogs at Costco are Sinai Kosher and at
Sam's Club they are Best's Kosher.
However, neither is cooked or grilled
kosher.) ❑
