GREEN SCENE

During the month of July, the
Franklin Arts Council brings back
"Music on the Green," a summer
music series running 7-8:30 p.m.
Wednesday evenings in Franklin.
The lineup includes the Beat Club
(the Fab Four are back!) on July 6;
the Paul Keller Orchestra (a Benny
Goodman show) on July 13; the Sun
Messengers (Motown and jazz) on
July 20; and Steve King and the
Dittlies (an oldies band) on July 27.
On July 6 and 27, there will be a tent
with free balloons, popcorn and a
prize drawing.
The concerts will take place on the
Franklin Village Green, located on
Franklin Road between 13 and 14
Mile roads.

Comerica Tastefest runs June 30-July 4
in Detroit's New Center.

ALL ACCORDION

The accordion, a musical instrument
often associated with klezmer sounds, is

regaining popularity and showing up in
the music of everyone from Paul Simon
and Tom Waits to the Rolling Stones
and They Might Be Giants.
The Motor City is revving up to wel-
come hundreds of accordionists and
accordion aficionados from all over the
world to attend the Annual Festival and
Competition sponsored by the
American Accordionists Association at
the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, run-
ning July 6-10.
The 2005 festival will spotlight a
kaleidoscope of noted accordionists per-
forming in musical idioms from jazz,
pop and polkas to rock, folk and world
music. Events include concerts, work-
shops, master classes and
• an array of
competitions.
At 7 p.m. Friday, July 8, Peter Soave
will premiere For Elsie, a John
Franceschina composition honoring
Elsie Bennett, who hails from Detroit's
Jewish community, on the occasion of
her 86th birthday. A longtime
Accordionists board member and chair
of the Composers Commission,
Bennett will attend the performance.
