Hebron/JTA — The son of the settler
who carried out a 1994 massacre of
Palestinians in Hebron reportedly will
receive Israeli air force wings. The eld-
est son of the late Baruch Goldstein,
identified in the Israeli media only as
2nd Lt. Y., was among 150 air force
cadets who complete their three-year
training course Wednesday. He is slat-
ed to become a combat navigator and
has been commended for his disci-
pline. Baruch Goldstein machine-
gunned 29 worshipers at a Hebron
mosque in 1994, and was lynched by
• survivors.

Tel Hashomer/JTA — An Israeli gave
birth after receiving transplanted ovar-
ian tissue. The 31-year-old woman
had a healthy girl at Sheba Medical
Center on Monday, despite having
been rendered infertile by chemothera-
py. The solution, which was reported
by the New England Journal of
Medicine, was to implant her with
healthy ovarian tissue that had been
stored on ice since before she began
her cancer treatment.

Remembering Eli Cohen
Damascus/JTA — Israel honored its
most famous spy 40 years after Eli
Cohen was executed in Syria. Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon said in a speech
at the Jerusalem memorial ceremony
Monday: "Eli's death exposed
him as one of the anonymous fighters
of the State of Israel's intelligence
community, who each performs tasks
that should not be kept hidden — but
should be glorified and receive the
gratitude of the nation."
The Egyptian-born Cohen was
recruited by the Mossad and planted
in Syria, where he gathered informa-
tion on the political and military ech-
elons considered key to Israel's victory
in the 1967 Six-Day War. But he
never saw that success, as he was dis-
covered and hanged in 1965.
Digest
Sharon told Cohen's widow, Nadia,
that he considered the return of
Cohen's remains important to the
resumption of peace talks with Syria,
which stalled in 2000.
Sharon: We Want U.S. Jews
Jerusalem/JTA
Ariel Sharon said
U.S. Jewish immigration is vital for
Israel's survival as a Jewish homeland.
"The first step to ensuring a Jewish
majority is aliyah — widespread and
broad aliyah from the entire Jewish
Diaspora, and particularly from North
America. Aliyah ensures not only the
future of the State of Israel, but also
the future of the Jewish people," the
Israeli prime minister said in a speech
to the Jewish Agency for Israel's
assembly in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Gay Parade Goes Ahead
Jerusalem/JTA — An Israeli court over-
turned the City of Jerusalem's ban of a
gay pride parade. The Jerusalem
District Court ruled Sunday against
Mayor Uri Lupolianski's decision to
ban the parade, and fined him
$6,500, citing the gay community's
right to freedom of expression.
Lupolianski had argued that the annu-
al event, to be held June 30, offended
religious sensibilities in the holy city.
Arab Convert Joins IDF
Gaza Strip/JTA —A Palestinian youth
who converted to Judaism reportedly
enlisted in the Israeli military. Amnon
Yitzhak-Shachar, who was born
Ayman Abu-Zubuch in the Gaza Strip
town of Khan Younis, reported to
Israel's main draft office last week and
was mobilized, Ma'ariv said Sunday.
According to the newspaper,
Yitzhak-Shachar would not mind
serving in a combat unit and fight his
former compatriots in Gaza. The
Palestinian Israeli became interested in
Judaism as a teenager, when he
accompanied his father to work in
Kfar Saba. He said his parents ban-
ished him from Khan Younis after his
conversion, and that he chose his new
first name, Amnon, after the surname
of the Israeli family that adopted him.

to 300,000 people of Jewish heritage
live in Argentina, according to a sur-
vey. done by an American Jewish

group, in association with a local
sociological studies organization. The
group considered all those born to a
Jewish mother or father, or those
