SAM COHEN

City: Franklin
Kudos: Giving Back, Giving Backpacks

When the school buses begin to roll this
fall, Sam Cohen will celebrate his bar
mitzvah at Congregation Shrum) , Zedek
Wiest Bloomfield ffnai Israel Center
knowing that he helped youngsters start o ff
the school year carrying brand-new back-
packs filled with school supplies.
Sam's parents, Drs. Susan and Steven
Cohen ofFmnklin, encouraged Sam to cre-
ate his own mitzvah project, so he came up
with the idea of a fair to raise money to
help local kids in need.
The fair; named Good Deed" was
held June 3 in the Cohen's back yard. The
whole family including Sam sister,
Jaymie, 14, and brothers, Noah, 9, and
Josh, 5, pitched in, along with many
friends and neighbors. Close to 100 people
attended and $517 in cash was raised
plus supplies for 60 backpacks.
`!It was a lot of work, and Sam got very
involved" said his mother, a pediatrician
at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Why organize your oiArn fair?
"I wanted to do something fun to
help other kids, so I decided to have a
fair to raise money to buy backpacks
and school supplies for kids who could-
n't afford their own. Everyone had to
bring school supplies as their entry fee,
and we sold punch cards for $10 for the
games."

What were some of the things you
had- to do?
"I started about two months ahead to
time. First I designed flyers and handed
them out at school. Then I had to think
up all the games; and my mom helped
me figure out how to make everything.
We had about 15 different stations; a
three-legged race, Tic Tac Toe in a gar-
dening pot, a fishing game with real
goldfish, horseshoes, football and basket-
ball. The water balloon toss was the
most popular. My brother Noah did a
magic show"

How did you feel when it was over?
"I felt great; it was really fun, and we
raised a lot of money that will help a lot
of kids. We were able to buy 60 back-
packs, and we collected a lot of school
supplies to go inside of them.
"It was good for all who helped out,
too, because they did something special
that they can always rememberY"

Berkley and Shaarev Zedek's Beth
Hayeled day camp, and my dad and I
do a lot of things together. We've gone
to Goodwill centers, and we helped
build sukkot for people who live in
JARC and Kadima homes. And I'm
helping my dad [a dentist in Detroit]
collect toothbrushes, toothpaste and
dental floss to donate to needy people in
Detroit." ❑

What is your other volunteer work?
"I've volunteered at Yad Ezra in
