JUNE BREAKFAST SPECIALS 7 DAYS A WEEK UNTIL NOON $395 Omelette Breakfast Jacobi, whose interest in Jewish art and artists came after the years she attended services with a small congregation in Pontiac. "We will have one artist, Ami Goldfarb of New Jersey, who designs Judaica, framed batik pieces with Hebrew sayings. Two of the Jewish artists are Sara Frank, who does tiles and pottery, and Debra Metier, who makes one-of-a-kind jackets from recycled clothing." Networking Jacobi, in her 50s, thinks of her job as a marketer and promoter who wants to appeal to people of all ages and back- grounds. She started putting fairs together in 1991 while operating a store in Ferndale to sell collectibles. "I knew we needed some attraction to bring customers into our area, so I approached people in city administra- tion with the idea of having an art fair," recalls Jacobi, who networked with many contacts in the arts and entertain- ment fields to find people to be featured at the event. "In the second year, we formed the Ferndale Arts Council so we could expand what we were doing, and I stayed with it for five years." After her experience in Ferndale, where the fair became a volunteer proj- ect as she solicited work from artists, Jacobi asked Oak Park to hire her to plan that city's annual fair, since discon- tinued. Knowing what visitors found most interesting in Ferndale, she sought out comparable activities for Oak Park. Jacobi, now an office manager, had retailing experience to bring to fair oper- ations. As a teen living in Bloomfield Township, she started working in cloth- ing stores and went on to study retailing at Northwood University in Midland. As she moved to different cities around the state, she sold electronics and jewel- ry. Jacobi, a Ferndale resident married to Warren art teacher Richard Jacobi, attended the Huntington Woods fair a number of times before being asked to manage it and the Woods Gallery at the city library. To keep variety in this year's event, Jacobi has scheduled Debra Adamcik, who does caricatures; Mary Ortwine, who makes teddy bears from recycled fur; and Apryl Lea, who designs whimsi- cal metal garden pieces. Her choices for entertainment include Sheila Landis, who performs jazz with her trio; Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones, who play the blues; Tumbao musicians, who spe- cialize in Latin beats; and Joe Weaver and the Rhythm Rockers, who bring back R&B-. "Huntington Woods is a welcoming, artsy community, and I think the Huntington Woods fair has a homey, family feel," says Jacobi, whose volunteer projects include working behind the scenes on a cable TV show, Seranatas Latinas, which features Spanish enter- tainers from around the country and airs at 9 p.m. Saturdays on Huntington Woods and Berkley cable stations. "The people involved with Art in the Woods, including the volunteers, just seem to pull together, and they give the event a friendly, family-oriented feeling. The surroundings, especially the church grounds and the big shady trees, add to all that. "I always find unusual things to put in my home and to use as gifts when I attend these fairs, and I'm looking for- ward to doing that at our upcoming event." ❑ Art in the Woods Fine Art & Fine Craft Fair runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, June 25-26, at the Huntington Woods Lutheran Church, 12935 W. 11 Mile Road, in Huntington Woods.
