JCC Leadership

New officers and board members were
installed and a new executive director
was introduced during the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit's annual meeting in West
Bloomfield on June 15.
Incoming JCC
Executive Director
Mark Lit called his
predecessors,
including the most
recent Center
director David
Sorkin, those "who
have really set the
stage for us."
"It's our chal-
lenge to take this
Lit
organization to
greatness," said
Lit, who took the helm earlier that
day. "We will do this with honor,
integrity, with fiscal responsibility and
with an eye to the community aspect
of Jewish community centers."
Installed to the board of directors
were president, Irwin Alterman; chair
of the executive committee, Hannan
Lis; vice presidents, Patti Aaron, Doris
Blechman, Carol Weintraub Fogel,
and Todd Sachse; treasurer, Gerald
Wolberg; secretary, Marc Kahn; and
members at large: Cliff Dovitz, Brian
Siegal and Nathan Upfal.

When Hannan Lis, then president,
and Sharon Hart, then chair of the
executive committee, asked him to
agree to be nominated for the presi-
dency of the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit, Vice
President Irwin Alterman said he
bounced the idea off of "a couple of
very close, highly placed friends at
Federation."
The first person said, "Why would
you want to do that?" The second
said, "They should send a bulldozer to
the JCC."
"Based on this encouragement,"
Alterman quipped, "I reported back
that I would consider being nominat-
ed. Last week when someone offered
me his congratulations, another per-
son present offered me his condo-
lences."
Alterman also reflected on his lack
of anonymity in the JCC health club
locker room. He recalled a conversa-
tion he had with the late David

Hermelin, a giant of Detroit Jewry
and a frequent jester. "David told me
that when he was a vice president of
Shaarey Zedek, people would come
up and wish him a good Shabbos. The
day he became president, people
tapped him on the shoulder and said,
`Excuse me, David. Do you have a
minute?'"
On a serious note, Alterman said at
his June 15 installation: "I begin the
exciting opportunity the JCC board
has given me, and I look forward to
the hard work with great enthusiasm."

Living Fit

Ashley Bronstein,
11, of Farmington
Hills will appear on
a local television
special on child-
hood obesity, nutri-
tion and exercise at
7 p.m. Saturday,
June 25, on
WDIV-TV
(Channel 4).
Bronstein
The program is
sponsored by fitness
expert Peter Nielsen and Medical
Weight Loss Clinics. Nielsen talked to
students at several schools, including
O.E. Dunckel Middle School in
Farmington Hills, where Ashley is a
student. Students to appear on the
show were selected on the basis of an
essay they wrote.
Ashley wrote: "Why is physical fit-
ness and healthy eating important to
me? Whenever I hear this question, I
immediately think of lifting weights
and a bowl of fruit. I guess there's
more to eating healthy and staying fit.
Eating healthy is so important to me
because I only have one life, and why
waste that life by being an overweight
junk eater?
"My goal in life is to beat the world
record for the oldest person to ever
live. I know it's tough, but if I want to
achieve my hard goal, then I'm going
to have to start eating what my body
is telling me to eat and not my mind.
To stay fit, I must spend more time
outside and less on the couch. If I
were to live long, I'd want to know
that I am healthy and not living off
junk. To achieve this goal I better start
eating health _ y and staying fit begin-
ning now!"
Ashley is the daughter of Michelle
and Joel Bronstein.
