Urge Stem Cell Override

Nine of Michigan's 15 congressional
representatives, including those repre-
senting a large majority of the state's
Jewish population, have voted against
lifting President Bush's restrictions on
stem cell research, although 73 per-
cent of Michiganders favored the bill.
I urge JN readers to write their con-
gressmen to vote to override the
anticipated veto of this bill, however
they may have voted before. I believe
that opposition to stem cell research
is based on a serious misunderstand-
ing of the scientific, theological and
ethical implications.
The human male produces billions
of sperm and the human female sev-
eral hundred eggs in a lifetime.
Clearly, no Creator (or "intelligent
designer" for that matter) intended all
of this raw material to become
human beings! To become a living
human, a fertilized egg must become
implanted in a uterus.
The error made by the president
and fundamentalists, both Christian
and Jewish, is that it is factually
incorrect to equate cells that have no
possibility of such implantation with
living human beings. (In fact, even
30 percent of embryos implanted
spontaneously abort.)
Clearly, humans were created with
an abundance of raw materials for
embryonic stem cell research and the
intelligence to do so as well. While
some religious conservatives, acting in
the name of a "culture of life," con-
tinue to prevent this research from
going forward, patients who could be
helped will continue to die or suffer
needlessly. Make no mistake, this
research will be carried out, and it
will produce effective treatments and
cures.
