Flying Rewards Parents rack up miles for weekend ceremonies. LEONARD POGER Copy Editor G raduation is a special time for families. There are celebrations, sharing of memories — and expenses. Sharon and David Horowitz of West Bloomfield went above and beyond last month — about 1,900 miles worth — to get to the college graduations of their two sons. Ten months before the May 14-15 graduation weekend, the Horowitzes booked six legs of plane trips. The first destination was in upstate New York, where Jason received his bachelor's degree in broad- cast journalism May 14 at Syracuse University. Older brother Todd graduated the following day from the University of Illinois as a doctor of veteri- nary medicine. Other family members had to choose between the two ceremonies, so the Horowitzes also sched- uled a June 4 party in the Detroit area for the fam- ily. The only sad part of the graduation weekend, Sharon said, was that the brothers couldn't be at each other's graduation. Sharon said the best part of the weekend was seeing the brothers culminate their dreams and that "dreams do come true." Both sons are pursuing careers they have dreamed of since they were youngsters. Jason's passion, which began at the age of 2, was to be a sportscaster. As a youngster, he used to hone his play-by-play skills with video games. In high school, he worked on the Bloomfield Hills Andover radio station for three years. Todd has dreamed of becoming a veterinarian since middle school. As a teenager, he worked in a veterinarian practice for five summers. Todd, who will be 26 on June 23, graduated from Andover in 1997 with honors, followed by four years at Michigan State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in biology and science. He recently passed the national and California board exams for licensing. Jason, who will be 22 on July 23, also graduated with honors with a 3.73 GPA. He finished third among four finalists in a competition for an ESPN SportsCenter anchor position. He had internships at Fox Sports Network, and the Cape Cod Baseball League and did sports programming on Syracuse's radio station.
