raduation is a special time for families.
There are celebrations, sharing of memories
— and expenses.
Sharon and David Horowitz of West Bloomfield
went above and beyond last month — about 1,900
miles worth — to get to the college graduations of
their two sons.
Ten months before the May 14-15 graduation
weekend, the Horowitzes booked six legs of plane
trips. The first destination was in upstate New York,
where Jason received his bachelor's degree in broad-
cast journalism May 14 at Syracuse University.
Older brother Todd graduated the following day
from the University of Illinois as a doctor of veteri-
nary medicine.
Other family members had to choose between
the two ceremonies, so the Horowitzes also sched-
uled a June 4 party in the Detroit area for the fam-
ily.
The only sad part of the graduation weekend,
Sharon said, was that the brothers couldn't be at
each other's graduation.
The travel plans were not perfect: The three-day
marathon included one canceled flight and a hur-

The hectic schedule had
David and Sharon flying from
Detroit to Cincinnati to
Syracuse, back to Cincinnati,
then off to Champaign, Ill.,
back to Cincinnati and then
back to Detroit.
Sharon said the best part of
the weekend was seeing the
brothers culminate their dreams and that "dreams
do come true." Both sons are pursuing careers they
have dreamed of since they were youngsters.
Jason's passion, which began at the age of 2, was
to be a sportscaster. As a youngster, he used to hone
his play-by-play skills with video games. In high
school, he worked on the Bloomfield Hills Andover
radio station for three years.
Todd has dreamed of becoming a veterinarian
since middle school. As a teenager, he worked in a
veterinarian practice for five summers.
Todd, who will be 26 on June 23, graduated from
Andover in 1997 with honors, followed by four
years at Michigan State University, where he
received a bachelor's degree in biology and science.
In completing his veterinary degree, he earned aca- .
demic honors with a 3.7 grade point average. He
