Annemarie Roeper's philosophy instilled
selfworth, religious pride.
She is a woman with a mission. Her name is Annemarie
Roeper, born in 1918 and still alive. She and her husband,
George, were an academic couple who fled from pre-World
War II Germany together with her educator parents, Max
and Gertrude Bondy, to organize a school in Switzerland for
children who were refugees from the Nazis. Later they came
to the United States and established the non-denominational
Roeper City and Country School in Bloomfield Hills.
Annemarie's philosophy of education, in general, and of
gifted education, in particular, reflects her attitude towards

life. She stresses the importance of teaching children in an
atmosphere of emotional and spiritual support ...
...I was privileged to attend middle school at the Roeper School. There, all stu-
dents are encouraged to use their given ethnic names. There was a wide range of
names in the classroom from Arabic to Korean to Japanese or Chinese. I am a reli-
gious Jew. When I attended Roeper School, other students looked at the religious
garments I wore and said that they were "cool." Instead of being ridiculed for my
differences, I was met with a positive reception. When I wanted to take off time
from Roeper School to attend the March for Israel in Washington, D.C., (my dad
and I traveled 10 hours each way on a bus), my teachers said they understood that
sometimes students may have moral obligations that demand time commitments
normally allocated to everyday school work. These experiences at Roeper served to
enhance my own self-worth and pride in my faith and customs.

Grandmother's determination showed
America's opportunities.
My grandmother Anne married my grandfather Rudolph J.
Newman, a voluntary pilot from the U.S. in 1949. Three
years after their first child was born, they moved (from Israel)
to Detroit, Michigan, where my grandfather worked as an
accountant. Although my savta could do many things, the
only job she could find was manual labor at a pharmaceutical
wholesale warehouse called Frank W Kerr.
Even though she worked as a janitor, she was willing to do
a variety of jobs, everything from lifting heavy boxes to clean-
ing the restrooms. She was fascinated by the United States
Eli Newman
because it was so different from Israel, so she did anything
that came her way. They gave her a promotion to be a packer
and she still stayed as ambitious as ever. After only five month, she was transferred
to the office and from her experience in the army, she became a buyer. She later
became the president, CEO and now the owner. Her ability to surpass her goals and
make the best of a situation makes her heroic.
My grandmother told me, 'The U.S is the only country where, if you work hard,
the opportunities are endless and the sky is the limit. Everything is available, afford-
able and easy to start a life. People here are helpful and friendly. Even if uneducated,
you have opportunities to develop and grow."
