F.
stranger to fine community dining ...
Back in 1988, he, Sam Locricchio and
John Di Anglis opened the original
Andiamo in Warren that was sold to
its present owner, Joe Vicari, in 1990.
He learned much from the late won-
derful chef, Ernie De Michelle, whose
culinary progress gained much note ...
Folks will remember Bill's delights at
Pine Knob's La Veranda back in 1980
... And very much so after he and his
partners sold Andiamo to Vicari.
It was in 1990 that he, Sam
Locricchio and John Ausilio took over
a building on 12 Mile between
Mound and Van Dyke in Warren and
named it Arriva ... destined to become
one of the most popular dining and
dancing spots in the Midwest.
Today, he is part of a concept that
has created quite a sensation ...
Everything edible in the market is
available for consumption in the din-
ing sector during its business hours ...
Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.;
Sundays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. ... closed only
one day a year, Christmas ... This even
includes things from the seafood
counter where one might pick out a
tilapia filet and it will be cooked for
that customer right on the spot!
Although never on their minds
before, it is small wonder why Papa Joe's
owners, Tony and Ed Curtis, have eyes
on expansion into other communities.
"A CULINARY TREASURE" is
what Ristorante Cafe Cortina, 10 Mile
in Farmington Hills, is called in the June
issue of La Cucina Italiana magazine,
considered the number one authority on
Italian cooking and living ... Cafe
Cortina is the first Michigan restaurant
to be featured in the prestigious interna-
tionally distributed publication.
IT'S RESTAURANTS are not soul
food operations, but all three Sweet
Lorraine's locations in Southfield,
Livonia and downtown Detroit are
honoring June Soul Food month with
the likes of grilled chicken with grits
macaroni and cheese, cornbread, col-
lard greens, ribs, spicy shrimp, etc.
NOSTALGIA DEPT ... by Sheryll
Bellman, author of the book coming
out this fall, America's Great Delis:
,
Recipes and Traditions from Coast To
Coast that will feature Darbys and
Boesky's from this area.
"My husband (Joel Rost) and I were
frequent customers at the London
Chop House and loved it while living
in the Detroit area. They might have
been our best restaurant experiences
ever. You don't find places like that
anymore. We knew just about every-
one at the 'Chop,' Sally the hostess,
Jose the bartender who would see me
and immediately make me a fresh
lemonade. It was heavenly with great
matzah and salty butter, butterfly
shrimp with Pancho sauce and the
Gold Brick sundae.
"It is such a shame that places like
that close. We weren't part of the usual
in crowd" that went there regularly,
but we were there frequently for the
food and dancing.
"Also to Joe Muer's a superior
restaurant as well and to Lelli's, the old
one on Woodward near Grand
Boulevard. I really didn't cook much
in those days, pre-children, so Joel and
I just made the rounds. We traveled all
over and sailed the nicest ships as far
back as the 1950s, and I have never
had food as good as those three restau-
rants — the best in the world. What a
shame that they are gone!"
IT MAY BE THE last chance folks
will get to play the beautiful Bay
Pointe Country Club 18-hole golf
course ... with it being sold for resi-
dential development.

for the final episode of The Contender
with Sylvester Stallone, Sugar Ray
Leonard and myself, on NBC-TV.
Thomas Hearns came out for the
