Beyond 350
Celebrating the 350th year of Jewish
life in America was the theme of the
jointly held annual meetings of the
American Jewish Committee
Metropolitan Detroit Chapter (AJC)
and the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan (JHS) June 8 at
Congregation Beth Shalom.
Andrew S. Doctoroff laid out his
vision for the coming year, his second
as AJC president; AJC Director
Sharona Shapiro highlighted recent
successes and Judy Greenstone Miller
installed members of the AJC board.
Robert Kaplow of Farmington Hills
reported as president of JHS and
Mary Lou Zieve presented the 2005
Leonard N. Simons History Award to
Edith Feinberg Resnick for her work
on the archives of Detroit's Central
High School. Joan Braun conducted
the JHS elections.
The speaker, Jewish historian and
Colby College professor Dr. Howard
Lupovitch, discussed lessons from the
past 350 years that may indicate the
future of American Jewry. He was
introduced by Judith Levin Cantor
— Harry Kirsbaum, who chaired the Michigan coalition
stafFwriter for the 350th year celebration.
"America has always been funda-
mentally different from any other
place Jews have lived," said Dr.
Lupovitch, noting America's openness
and that religious activity here is
entirely voluntary.
