One bite and you'll be hooked
"One of your region's
better little dining secrets."
— Danny Raskin
*** Detroit Free Press
combination of homemade cheese and
potatoes.
Bombay Grille is very clean, seating
150 in two well-appointed rooms of
all tables covered by black linen table-
cloths with white overlays and black
linen napkins ... An 80-seat room is
with a center dance floor surrounded
by carpeting ... and the other for
another 70 of intimate dining pleas-
ure.
Live music is featured every
Thursday evening, 6-10 p.m.
Bombay Grille is open seven days a
week ... Sunday-Thursday, 11:30-10;
Friday, 11:30-11; Saturday, noon-11
... All days include a lunch buffet and
regular menu ... Sunday lunch buffet
is North Indian only.
Northern Indian natives come from
everywhere to taste dishes they can't
get elsewhere ... Like the lamb
Hyderabadi and Chicken Hyderabadi,
both specialties from the city of
Hyderabadi, cooked in a poppy-seed
and cashew-nut creamy white sauce.
A big vegetarian seller is the
Navrattan (which means nine of any-
thing) Korma, mixed vegetables
cooked in the cream and poppy-seed
sauce ... I don't think you will find
Uarali Vathakal anywhere else in this
area ... potatoes roasted crisp with
•
mustard seeds and curry leaves.
And you hardly will see desserts
flamed in cognac on rolling carts at
this type of restaurant ... where
kitchen help who touch food wear
gloves and kitchen staff members have
hair coverings.
Among interesting delights at the
new Bombay Grille is a mint-flavored
drink that all diners receive to refresh
their palates before eating ... and a
damp cloth that is given prior to delv-
ing into the food.
Northern Indian fine dining in
itself is highly regarded ... Now that
it also presents Indian-Chinese fusion,
Bombay Grille brings a new world of
exciting taste-tingling temptations.
TODAY'S RESTAURANTS are in
luck when they can boast having even
a few good servers ... That's how
tough it is to get first-class waitper-
sons ... So, one where almost all its
servers are well over the high average
mark is quite a huge positive feature
... No small reason why Pepino's in
Walled Lake is among the best values
around
with quality food, fine
service and reasonable prices to go
with its intimacy and friendliness.
EYES & EARS DEPT. ... This
wasn't Lindy's in the Flamingo Hilton
or wherever in Las Vegas ... My low-
fat hamburger was being eaten at Mr.
Joe's in Southfield ... Keno cards at
the tables and booths ... A Keno TV
screen with numbers ... The realiza-
tion that it was the Michigan Club
Keno lottery ... Big smile on the face
of custom tailor Dino Metropoulos in
Birmingham, with word out that
men's suits have made a huge come-
back for "in" status again ... Sport
jackets, too, as informal in too many
instances has become just plain slop-
py.
THE THIRD YEAR of another
entertaining Pontiac event that began
as the result of Mayor Willie Payne
enjoying a lifestyle of growing up in
New Orleans, will kick off its summer
line-up.
Pontiac's JAMbalaya Street Festival
2005, will be a three-day Mardi-Gras-
themed shindig ... Friday, June 24, 4-
midnight; Saturday, June 25, 11-mid-
night; Sunday, June 26, 11-8 ... Food
features will be by about 20 restau-
rants, giving tastes of barbecued ribs,
seafood, Cajun goodies, etc.
First year brought around 100,000
folks and 250,000 in 2004, for the
carnival, arts & crafts, music, NBA
Rhythm 'n Rims basketball exhibi-
tion, etc.
CONGRATS ... To Lillian and
Monroe Title on their eighth wedding
anniversary, celebrated with table for
four at Angelo's Bistro.
MAIL DEPT. ... "I don't usually
correct anyone. I just let it go, but I
couldn't help but tell you of your col-
umn of May 5 about Carl of Carl's
Chop House. After reading it one
time, I thought you made a mistake,
but every time you talked about him
you referred to him as Carl Rosenfeld.
If you check further, I think you
would find that his last name was
Rosenfield. I've known it for many
years since Rosenfield was my maiden
name." ... Daphne Rosenfield
Fenster.
(Thanks for correcting me, Daphne.
Don't know how in the world I could
make such a mistake, knowing Carl as
well as I did.)
"You are right. There is nothing
wrong with enjoying a mustard omelet
if someone loves mustard that much.
Norman K's wife should be ashamed
of herself calling him a strange eater
for enjoying what he loves best. I am a
,peanut butter housewife and regularly
make myself a peanut butter omelet.
Our children love it, too. We certainly
don't consider ourselves strange
eaters."
