Berman Award

GIFT from page 41

for Outstanding Professional Service

created by Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman

the Temple sacrifices the Jewish people
had to be satisfied with dairy foods.
Others note the proximity of the
Torah verses that discuss the first fruits
with the commandment to separate
meat and dairy in the kosher diet.
One tradition says that the Jews wait-
ed so long for the Torah that they were
exhausted; when they returned to their
tents, they fixed the simplest food possi-
ble, which was dairy. In Song of Songs,
the Torah is likened to honey and milk.

It's always best not to go unprepared in
your search for any Jewish holidays on
the Web. You'll find a lot of advertise-
ments and some very, very boring sites.
There are, however, a handful of great
places to visit. We recommend for
Shavuot:
php?id=3268cgid=2. If you actually
manage to type in that complicated and
long Web address, you'll find yourself at
the Shavuot page for the NSW Board of
Jewish Education. New South Wales is
the Australian state where Sydney is.
(Australia is best-known as the home
of actress Nicole Kidman; that very, very
sweet group of children's entertainers
called the Wiggles; and of actor Russell
Crowe. [An interesting story about
Russell Crowe, by the way: after a
yeshivah in Australia was burned down
— the result of arson — Crowe quietly
paid for its entire rebuilding.]
(Australia also is the only country,
outside of the United States, to have
voted against yet another recent United
Nations attempt to condemn Israel for
human-rights violations.)
This site has some of the usual materi-
al: basic facts about Shavuot and ideas
for celebrating. But it also has something
quite cool you won't find anywhere else
on the Web: the chance for you to add
your own facts. This is fun!
content_display.html?ArticleID=9126.
Here are some really new ideas, courtesy
the Jewish Federation of Greater Long
Beach and West Orange County, Fla.
shavuos/shavustr.htm. Jewish fun on the
Web for the younger set just doesn't get
any better than Torah Tots.
shavuot_together/shavuot_par.shtml.
This is the Web site of the Conservative
movement's Melton School, and it's a
nice place for parents and children to go
together. Be sure to check out the Torah
poster, which can be downloaded, then
filled in (there are good questions for
families to answer) and colored (it's real-
ly cute!). ❑
