Dear
Bar , st
time you spoke
about toxins in
farmed salmon.
What about
mercury in fish? Thanks, Diana.
A
nswer: Dear Diana, Fish
and shellfish contain
protein and other essential
nutrients, are low in saturated fat,
and contain omega-3 fatty acids,
which can contribute to heart
health and childrens' growth and
development. The FDA and EPA,
however, warn that some fish and
i shellfish contain higher ley-
-;,_ els of mercury than can be
safely recommended.
The FDA and EPA cur-
rently recommend that
women who may become
) pregnant, are pregnant
or nursing, and young
children, should:
• Not eat Shark, Sword-
/ fish, King Mackerel, or
/ Tilefish because they con-
tain high levels of mercury;
• Eat up to 12 oz. (2 average
meals) a week of a variety of fish
and shellfish that are lower in
mercury, e.g., shrimp, canned light
tuna (but only 6 oz. of albacore
tuna), salmon, pollock, and catfish;
• Check local advisories about the
safety of fish caught in local waters
and coastal areas. If no advice is
available, eat up to 6 oz. per week
of such fish, but don't consume any
other fish during that week.
