at its inaugural Awards Night
May 26, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit hon-
ored Vivian Berry of West Bloomfield
and Graham A. Orley and Joseph H.
Orley, both of Bloomfield Hills, as recip-
ients of its 2005 Lifetime Achievement
Award, the community's recognition for
outstanding volunteer service.
Federation president Peter Alter
remarked that the award pays in small
measure "our community's highest
tribute and deepest gratitude to those
who have demonstrated their dedica-
tion — not just by their longevity, but
also by the range of their commit-
ment, leadership and creativity."
Also honored were Amy Schlussel of
Birmingham, Scott Kaufman of
Bloomfield Hills and Brad "Bubba"
Urdan of West Bloomfield as this
year's recipients of the Sylvia Simon
Greenber.-b Award, the Frank A.
Wetsman Award and the Mark Family
Award, respectively. Artist Robert
Schefman received the Benard Maas
Prize for Achievement in Jewish
Culture and Continuity in Fine Arts.
No stranger to awards, Vivian Berry
is the recipient of Israel Bonds'
Woman of Valor Award as well as the
Eternal Light Award, the highest
recognition bestowed by the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America. An
expert fund-raiser legendary in
Federation's Women's Department,
Berry has served as vice president and
chair of functions too numerous to
mention. She has served as president
of sisterhood of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek and is a founder and past chair
of the Michigan Branch of Women's
League for Conservative Judaism.
Through the years, Berry has also
been an active and influential force in
Hadassah, American Jewish Congress,
Detroit Committee for the Mainte-
nance of Separation of Church and
State, and American Friends of the
Weizmann Institute of Science. She is
the wife of the late Louis Berry and
