Archivist To Be Honored
• The rescuer of Detroit Central High
School's 150-year-old historical
archives will receive the 2005 Leonard
N. Simons Award
for the Preservation
and Dissemination
of Michigan Jewish
History on
Wednesday, June 8.
Edith (Edie)
Feinberg Resnick
will be honored by
the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan
at its annual meet-
ing, to be held
jointly with the American Jewish
Committee, at 7 p.m. at Congregation
Beth Shalom in Oak Park.
Resnick, a native Detroiter and
1944 graduate of Central High, pur-
sued the task of locating, organizing
and chronicling the school's history
and its strong Jewish identity, dating
back to 1858. The documents, includ-
ing yearbooks, school records and
photographs, now are accessible for
research at the Walter P. Reuther
Library of Labor and Urban Affairs at
Wayne State University.
The 2004 edition of the journal
Michigan Jewish History, published by
the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan, carries the first installment
of Resnick's two-part history of
Central. A second installment will
appear in the 2005 journal.
The Simons Award is presented
annually to recognize distinguished
contributions to the history of Jews in
Michigan and to the Jewish Historical
Society. It was established in 1991.
The June 8 event — the 46th annu-
al meeting of the Jewish Historical
Society and the 60th annual meeting
of the American Jewish Committee —
also will celebrate 350 years of Jewish
settlement in North America. Special
guest Dr. Steven Bayme, AJC's nation-
al director of contemporary Jewish
life, will present his vision of the
future of American Jewry.
Chairs of the event are Levi Smith,
AJC's chair of Jewish communal
affairs, and Adele Staler, past presi-
dent of the Jewish Historical Society
of Michigan.
The meeting is open to the commu-
nity. For reservations, call (248) 646-
7686. The cost, $12.50 per person,
includes a dessert reception following
the joint meeting.
