rights, and reproductive
freedom. Founded in 1891,
National Council of Jewish
Women, Greater Detroit
Section has served as an
advocate for Michigan's
women, children and
families. In a pioneering
spirit and with a progressive
stance on issues at the local,
state and federal levels, our
members have come togeth-
er to make the Detroit area a
better place. Locally, we are

nity service projects, advoca-
cy work and public

Wayne State University.
She became a teacher in the Detroit
School System, where she taught ele-
mentary school drama for 40 years.
She also spent many summers teach-
ing at the Cranbrook Summer Theater
School and was active in the St.
Dustan's Theatre Guild of Cranbrook.
She married a fellow teacher,
Melvyn Maxwell Smith and built a
Frank Lloyd Wright house in
Bloomfield Hills, chronicled in her
book Building a Dream. In 2000, she
received the Frank Lloyd Wright Spirit
Award for keeping the spirit of Frank
Lloyd Wright alive.
The Smiths were staunch patrons of
local artists, especially graduates of the
Cranbrook Academy of Art, providing
a showcase for their works and collect-
ing ceramics and sculptures by the
young artists.
Mrs. Smith created a comprehen-
sive children's theater program at the
Birmingham Community House, the
Sara Smith Popcorn Players. She
moved with her family to Santa
Barbara in 1991, where she contin-
ued to be involved in children's the-
ater. In 2002, she received the Arts
Ambassador Award for her dedica-
tion to the Understudies, which pro-
vides financial support to Wayne
State University's graduate theater
department.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her
daughter-in-law, Anne Smith; grand-
son, Michael; granddaughter, Jennifer
Smith (Nicholas) Hale; nieces and
nephews. She was the wife of the late
Melvyn Maxwell Smith; mother of the
late Bobby Smith.
A memorial service was held in
Santa Barbara. Contributions may be
sent to the Birmingham Community
House Popcorn Players, 380 South
Bates, Birmingham, 48009.

Barbara, CA 93109.
A memorial service will be held at 2
p.m. Monday, June 13, at the Frank
Lloyd Wright home, 5045 Ponvalley,
Bloomfield Hills.
