ues-
tion:
Dear
Bar , n you
explain the con-
troversy over
farm-raised,
"dyed" salmon?

Thanks, Diana.

A

nswer: Dear Diana, Salm-
on is a source of beneficial
Omega-3 fatty acids. At-
lantic (not Pacific sockeye or coho)
salmon is the major farmed species
(ironically, often raised in pens in
the Pacific Ocean).

Atlantic salmon are preferred for
farming because it is claimed they
grow faster and survive better in
pens than Pacific salmon. Wild
salmon get their pink color from
eating marine organisms con-
taining carotenoids. Farmed
salmon are given concen-
trated food additives for
growth and color, hence,
the claim they are "dyed."

Studies by the Environ-
mental Working Group
(EWG) and the journal,
Science, have concluded
that farmed salmon may
contain higher levels of
certain chemical toxins
(e.g., PCBs) than wild
salmon and recommended that
farmed salmon be eaten (in moder-
ate portions) not more than once a
month, whereas wild salmon could
be eaten up to 8 times a month.
The farmed-salmon industry
disputes these findings and says
that the FDA, National Academy
of Sciences and American Heart
Association continue their recom-
mendations for consumption of
fatty fish including farmed salmon.
More on related issues next time.
