Science, Torah
T
o convince a world-class atheist
that God exists is certainly a
coup.
Dr. Gerald Schroeder did just that
when Dr. Anthony Flew, a university
philosophy professor at Oxford and
Cambridge and the reputed "world's
foremost atheist," read Dr. Schroeder's
latest book, The Hidden Face of God
(Free Press, 2001), and became a believ-
er.
Dr. Schroeder, a former Massachusetts
Institute of Technology professor of
nuclear physics and member of the U.S.
Atomic Energy Commission, now lives
in Israel, writing books reconciling sci-
ence and Torah.
His premise is that an underlying uni-
versal wisdom pervades every particle of
the universe. The details of life, from the
DNA and life processes of cells to the
core principles of physics, all point to an
overwhelmingly complex order, with a
guiding, unifying wisdom, commonly
known as God.
"Life has a direction and purpose that
cannot be explained in purely physical
terms," he says. "But there's a reluctance
to use the 'G' word."
Dr. Schroeder's best-selling book,
Genesis and the Big Bang (Bantam

talk at 7:30
Thursday, June 2, at
the Shanrey Zedek
B'nai Israel Center
in West Bloomfield.
His presentation,
"The Age of the
Dr. Schroeder
Universe: Six Days
or Fifteen Billion
Years?" is sponsored by Aish HaTorah.
Dr. Schroeder contends there is no
contradiction between the biblical view
of creation and that of modern science.
His view is based on the application of
Einstein's theory of relativity to the
Torah's six mysterious days of existence
before the creation of Adam.
Dr. Schroeder also will speak that
same day at 9:30 a.m. at Yeshivat Akiva
in Southfield on the topic "Were There
Dinosaurs?"
He will appear at Young Israel of Oak
Park at 7:30 p.m. on Shabbat, June 4,
on the subject "Scientific Evidence for
Life After Death." ❑

Israel Dedication
Farmington Hills • Livonia • Novi • Troy
Dr. Judith Goodman of Bloomfield
Hills was in Israel with her daugh-
ter Lauren Goodman of Columbus,
Ohio, for the dedication of the
Judy and Sidney Swartz Center for
Emergency Medicine at the
Hadassah Medical Center in
Ein Kerem.
The dedication culminated a
donor mission during which 700
major donors saw the fruits of their
efforts on behalf of the people of
Israel.
The new $50 million center can
treat 100,000-120,000 patients
annually, up 41 percent from previ-
ous use. It can double its capacity
in the event of mass casualties and
has safeguards against biological
and chemical attacks.
