"It's their birthright," says Andrea Simons, who teaches third- and fourth-grade Judaics at Congregation B'nai Moshe. "It's theirs to own and take care of — they are the next gen- eration." Simons participates in the JEEEP program for educators through Feder- ation's Alliance for Jewish Education, which included a study tour of Israel last year with fellow teachers. "I use maps and tie the history to the current sites so the students see these events happened in a real place," Simons said. 'And I took their notes and placed them in the Western Wall, then took photographs to show them. They used their tzedakah money to buy four trees in Israel. I never had that kind of connection to Israel growing up." The fourth-graders are so enthusi- astic they wrote a prayer for peace in Israel, with each student contributing a line: Blessed are you God, you can help the people of Israel to live five from worry or fear. May they live to be free to move from place-to-place without being scared. Protect their roads so they can drive their cars and ride on buses in safety. May Israel know peace with her neigh- bors and any enemy that may want to harm her people or her holy land.- May the people of Israel only have to walk through metal detectors at airports and not at malls or restaurants. May they feel secure so soldiers with guns will not have to be present in the streets. Parents will be able to let their children play in parks without their protection. Let all people living in Israel have smiles on their faces. Let peace shine throughout Israel with your shining grace. May your protection warm everyone's homes and hearts so all people can live together in peace in Israel. Please, God, hear our prayer for peace.
