Concert Of Hope
Survivor's memoirs inspire performance piece
scheduled May 25 at Holocaust Memorial Center.
SUZANNE CHESSLER
Special to the Jewish News
p
hilip Markowicz keeps in
touch with friends who experi-
enced the horrors of the
Holocaust with him. While dividing
his retirement between Ohio and
Florida, this survivor from Poland
often has visited pals settled in
Michigan, especially to share in their
joyous family celebrations.
During Markowicz's next visit to
suburban Detroit, his friends and
many others will have a chance to cel-
ebrate with him. The inner strength
that made him persevere to get a fresh
start in America will be explored in a
performance piece based on his mem-
oirs.
Tikvah: A Concert of Hope and
Remembrance will be presented at 7:15
p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the
Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills.
With Markowicz in the audience
and his narration on recording, this
survivor's life and outlook will be told
through an original score composed by
Burton Beerman, director of the
MidAmerican Center of
Contemporary Music at Bowling
Green State University.
The melodies will be played by the
Atlas Sax Quartet of Chicago and
pianist Stanley Yerlow, who has been
a regular on the TV show Live With
Regis and Kelly. The lyrics will be sung
by Andrea Rae, Markowicz's grand-
daughter, who last year appeared at
the Fisher Theatre in the cast of
Camelot. The dancing will be per-
formed by choreographer Celesta
Haraszti, Beerman's wife, who has
worked with the Hungarian Ballet
Theatre.
"Everything in this production
derives from Philip's writing," says
Beerman, a prize-winning
composer/clarinetist with master and
doctoral degrees in music from the
University of Michigan. "I selected the
parts of the memoirs to be used in this
piece, and the melodies come from the
early songs I -heard in the synagogue. I
wanted this program to be mostly
about survival."
Tikvah, which has been performed
in Toledo and Atlanta as well as other
cities, came together after members of
the Atlas Sax Quartet began looking
for a Holocaust piece they could per-
form. Knowing Beerman's work, the
