Win-Win Series MSU, Metro college students gain employment savvy from Hillel, ffnai ffrith joint program. ALAN HITS KY Associate Editor xtra job hunting skills and a bit of net- working are the goals for Metro Detroit area college students next week. A program brainstormed by area B'nai B'rith members and pioneered this spring at Michigan State University Hillel Foundation will make its second stop next week in Oak Park on what is becoming a national tour. Jewish students at local colleges and universities have been invited to the Professional Career & Development Series. It will be held 7 p.m. Tuesdays, May 24 and June 7, at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park. The free pro- grams on tips for interviewing and career success stories include a free pizza dinner. The inaugural three-part series at MSU Hillel in East Lansing attracted 60-70 students to each session. Stuart Novick of Southfield came up with the idea while talking to MSU Hillel staffers Cindy Hughy and Jonathon Koenigsberg last fall. He recruited B'nai B'rith members Sid Roth of West Bloomfield and Hillary Rubin of Wolverine Lake as implementers. The MSU series included a session on dressing for success, featuring Linda Sue Barrett of Nordstrom, and Ron Elkus and Rod Brown of the Shirt Box in Farmington Hills. Since Metro Hillel had a similar program 18 months ago, it will not be included in the upcoming series. Rubin, 24, said the program "gives kids a chance to network with people." Added Roth, "Most of the schools have large programs like this, but the advantage here is the intimate set- tings." The B'nai B'rith members are working to expand the idea to other campuses next year, and add a job-fair component. Roth said the program helps the students pre- pare for life after college, while getting them involved with the cam- pus Hillels and the Jewish community via B'nai B'rith. The success-story panelists in Oak Park will include Paula Goldman-Spinner of West Bloomfield, who is in real estate and a member of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization adult board; businesswoman Ilene Lubin of Huntington Woods, also on the BBYO adult board; MSU Hillel board member Ray Wert, who is on Four MSU students hold their Nordstrom gift bags after the dress for success Michigan Governor seminar in April.
