Amswelmmg Israel's Critics The Charge Israel's military oppresses the Palestinians. The Answer Israel is in a war against terrorists. War's cruelties include destruction, roadblocks and disruptions to the economy and education. To defend itself, Israel must arrest terrorists and thwart, sometimes with deadly force, those in the act of executing terrorist attacks. But Israel's army is civilian con- trolled by a democratic government that punishes its own lawbreakers and has strict rules of engagement to protect civilians. Israel has agreed to every cease- fire and peace initiative. The war will end on the same day that the Palestinians end the terror. — Allan Gale, Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit
