Diamonds Into Paintings

New York/JTA — An Anglo-Jewish
diamond mogul paid more than $12.6
million for an Andy Warhol portrait
of Elizabeth Taylor. London-based
jeweler Laurence Graff bought the
iconic 1963 image, one of 13
silkscreens made from a publicity
photo of Taylor in the year she filmed
Cleopatra" at a Sotheby's auction in
New York.
Graff, 65, outbid five other con-
tenders last week for the canvas, which
had been owned by a Los Angeles art
collector since 1965. The child of
Jewish immigrants to Britain, Graff
founded of one of the world's most
famous jewelry houses, which has
made him a fortune estimated at $1.4
billion.

Ayalon meets Pollard

Washington/JTA — Israel's ambassador
to Washington met with Jonathan
Pollard. Daniel Ayalon met with
Pollard on Tuesday at the North
Carolina prison where he is serving a
life sentence for spying for Israel.
Pollard, who was granted Israeli citi-
zenship in 1995, has demanded such a
visit for years, saying that the United
States otherwise wouldn't take his
requests for release seriously.
"In our meeting today, I conveyed
our support for his release on a
humanitarian basis," Ayalon said in a
statement. "I came to him with a mes-
sage of strength and support from the
Israeli government and people."
Ha'aretz reported that Pollard was
unhappy with the meeting, feeling it
lacked substance. A former U.S. Navy
intelligence analyst, Pollard pled guilty
in 1986 as part of a deal with the
prosecution. However, the judge threw
aside the plea and sentenced Pollard to
life in prison the following year.

Bishop: No To Divestment

Boston/JTA — The leader of the
Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts
has come out against proposals to
divest from Israel.
Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, head of
the 80,000-member diocese, which
includes 194 churches in eastern
Massachusetts, made the comments
in a statement for two members of
the diocese who, together with the
American Jewish Committee, are
planning an Israel trip for church
members in January.
"During this period of hope for
peace between Israel and Palestine,

divestment would be especially inap-
propriate. Because the economies of
Israel and Palestine are so closely
intertwined, divestment is actually
counterproductive for the Palestinian
people," Bishop Shaw wrote.

Episcopalians Rip Israel

New York/JTA — Episcopalians con-
sidering divesting from Israel have
slammed Israel's West Bank policy.
A fact-finding panel that returned
from a visit to the West Bank said it
was "deeply disturbed" by Israel's
security barrier, checkpoints, settle-
ment expansion and security meas-
ures around Palestinian areas, the
Episcopal Church (USA) said May
12.
The church's Social Responsibility
in Investments Committee will
report to church leaders later this
year on whether the church is profit-
ing from investments in companies
that support Israel's presence in the
West Bank or harm Palestinians.
