The Jewish Federation, the Jewish Commun
of Metropolitan Detroit,
and the entire Jewish community wis

have been in the founding group. A
president for five years, he feels blessed
to have had high-caliber directors like
Margolis and Bash, and to have worked
with board members who never
allowed their differences to overcome
their need to work together.
Smith feels that even some of the
shortcomings have turned to strengths.
For example, because the Ann Arbor
community lacks a single donor willing
to fund a new building, the entire corn-
n-iunity has had to come together to
fund multiple renovations of the cur-
rent site.
Ira Strumwasser, a former JCC presi-
dent and chair of the fundraising com-
mittee for the original renovation, was
struck by the many donations from
individuals who struggled to con-
tribute.
Margolis, nominally retired now
although still active in the affairs of the
JCC, remembers when her grandchild,
who recently became bar mitzvah, used
to attend the JCC preschool. "Hi,
Grandma Nancy," he used to call out
to her from the corridors. "That's really
been the most rewarding part for me
and the other board members — seeing
our grandchildren at the preschool and
Hebrew Day," she says.
"Larry Smith and Chuck Newman
both have grandchildren enrolled now.
That's really what we were doing all
this for — the next generation." Ei
