Michael Knell's body. Later, tahara
would be performed — ritual washing
of the body. There it was determined
that Knell did indeed have a brit milah
— not a guarantee, but certainly
another sign that he was Jewish.
Rabbi Levin planned the funeral for
Monday morning in Clinton
Township's Hebrew Memorial Park,
section 28-B. But then he learned of
Hari and Linda Orr. So he postponed
the service so the Orrs could drive in
from Grand Rapids.
It was almost nightfall when, at last,
Michael Knell's body was laid to rest.
Workers had come in to fill the grave.
Other than their movements and the
whisper of the wind, it was very quiet,
and a chill was coming.
"It was just the three of us," Rabbi
Levin says. "After saying the Jewish
prayers, I spoke as an American. And
when I spoke, I asked for his forgive-
ness, because as Americans we gave up
on him."
It got colder as the day came to a
close, as dark sky descended and the
cool, clean moon went up to keep watch
over the night. Everyone — Rabbi
Levin, the Orrs, the men who had dug
the grave — helped cover the casket
with dirt. And then they left and
Michael Knell was, once again, alone. 0

Backpacks And Love

Meijer Inc. has issued a grant to the
National Council of Jewish Women
Greater Detroit Section for its back-
pack project. Meijer donated gift cards
to purchase 300 backpacks and school
supplies for the project.
Now in its sixth year, the project
supplies backpacks and school supplies
to about 300 students per year in a
selected school. This year, students in
grades K-3 at Durfee Elementary in
Detroit will benefit.
As part of the project and in an
effort to promote reading, NCJW
members donate books several times a
year and bring them to the designated
school to read to the students. Each
child receives a book to take home.
Along with the school supplies,
backpacks also contain toothbrushes
and toothpaste donated by local den-
tists and a gift certificate for the
National Council of Jewish Women's
Thrift Shop.
