Melton's Impact

I may or may not be a typical Florence
Melton Adult Mini-School student
(Editor's Notebook, "Commit To
Learning," April 21, page 5). I did
graduate from Hebrew high school —
a long, long time ago.
But like most Hebrew high school
programs, mine was no different. We
learned the same material every year
for several years. We kept repeating
the same thing over and over again.
Questions were not looked upon in an
encouraging way; and so I finished the
program but did not know much
about who I was; what was my histo-
ry; what was my culture?
What Melton does is to inspire
adult Jewish learning. It offers a class-
room setting that is not intimidating
but, rather, inviting. It provides the
framework to explore the questions of
who we are as a people and at least
provides something that most of us
never received as young adults: a
Jewish education.
Coming back for the second and
final year was rewarding to me. This
was especially true when I discovered
that the class was essentially sold out
and there was a waiting list to attend.
Bravo, Melton! Keep up the good
work.

of our people at the hands of the
Ottoman Turks, instead of healing
open wounds, we are faced with
Turkey's ongoing campaign of denial
and world governments that lack the
moral vision to make a firm stand
against genocide prevention.
As victims and survivors of geno-
cide, we have a moral responsibility to
ensure that others do not suffer a simi-
lar fate. Just as individuals and govern-
ments gave relief and provided shelter
to our people in the early part of the
20th century, we must not turn our
back to those in need in the Darfur
region of Sudan. As individuals and as
a community, we should do every-
thing in our power to stop the geno-
cide unfolding before our very eyes.
One step we can take is to lend our
active and vocal support to the Darfur
Accountability Act of 2005, which
was introduced in Congress by U.S.
Sen. Jon Corzine of New Jersey. This
legislation clearly defines the atrocities
as genocide, imposes sanctions upon
the government of Sudan and calls for
a presidential envoy. We know the
perils of inaction; now is the time for
us to take action.
