One bite and you'll be hooked
"One of your region's
better little dining secrets."

the many young folks who have discov-
ered the wonderful music we loved.
And if you thought that ice skating
aboard a cruise ship in over 90-degree
Caribbean weather would be unthink-
able, there's some realization coming
your way ... Not only is there ice skating
on board Royal Caribbean's Voyager of
the Seas, but ice shows as well in its 900-
seat arena.
Voyager of the Seas may not be the
biggest today, but Royal Caribbean
International isn't about to let Queen
Mary II keep that distinction ... In June
2006, it will again come out with the
world's largest ... Freedom of the Seas.
Jottings ... Captain Erik Tengelsen
exercises by hopping along the Voyager's
massive bridge on his scooter ... Royal
Caribbean's Captain Michael
Lachtaridis, master of its Brilliance of the
Seas, is the cousin of Angelo Gerigizas,
owner of Angelo's Bistro in West
Bloomfield ... All its ships have two cap-
tains, but only one ship's master ... 24 of
Royal Caribbean's 38 captains are from
Norway, a good reason for Laila Strand,
writer for the Oslo, Norway, Ellers
women's magazine, to be on board, writ-
ing about the cruise line ... Alfie and
Bianca Lindzon of Aventura, Fla., on
their 39th cruise... Richard Ellis, with
wife, Sandra, of Harwich, Mass., all eyes
as Captain Tengelsen pointed to a navi-
gation map on the bridge ... Dick makes
them for C-Map USA.
Royal Caribbean obviously takes its
food quite seriously with a corporate
executive chef at the home office in
Miami, Rudy Sodemin, also a certified
master chef ... Gal vacationer getting a
hole-in-one on the Voyager's miniature
golf course and saying to her hubby, "I
thought you said it was so hard."
LOOKS LIKE HE has beaten his
competition to the proverbial punch ...
with the hiring of Rose Guttman by
Peter Berishaj, owner of the new Sky
Deli on Orchard Lake Road in
Farmington Hills.
Rose is one of the premier kitchen
geniuses in the northwest area and
brings to Sky Deli unequaled experience
... making her excellent stuffed cabbage,
gefilte fish, Hungarian goulash with its
high-quality consistency ... among so
many more traditional dishes ... Peter
can expect folks lined out the door for
the cholent (stew) that Rose makes 24
hours ahead, when it is on Sky Deli's
special menu ... Her homemade apple
strudel and banana nut cake are also big
favorites.
Rose and her late husband, Irving,
used to own the fine Irving's
Delicatessen ... highly noted for the
homemade dishes she made daily.
INTERIOR REMODELING of the
new soon-to-come Sea Grille at the for-
mer location of Big Daddy's in West
Bloomfield's on Orchard Lake Road,
will bring a much-needed better look ...
Replacing the cut-up appearance will be
a much more airy and cozier dining sec-
tor ... Big booths to go with regular-size
ones for dining, wine cabinet, larger pri-
vate room, etc. ... A lot of eager interest
awaits Sea Grille's opening expected
sometime this June.
CAN'T THINK OF too many major
restaurants that will give up their
Saturday night for a fund-raiser ... but
that's what Seldom Blues in Detroit's
Renaissance Center will do on Saturday,
May 21, from 6 p.m.
This year's big black-tie event by
Fanclub Arts Foundation, "Treasures
from the Cellar VI" will take over the
popular spot that evening.
The $250 per person will include
four-course gourmet dinner by Seldom
Blues' fine executive chef and partner
Jerry Nottage, including special wines,
hors d'oeuvres, champagne, live and
silent wine auctions plus choice items
for bidding ... Afterglow, too, with danc-
ing and music featuring songstress
Norma Jean Bell.
Always a fun event, proceeds will ben-
efit the organization's arts education pro-
grams.

tor, at the Fanclub, (248) 584-4150
A SECOND SOUL FOOD restau-
rant, not far from his Beans & Corn-
bread in Southfield, will be opened by
owner Patrick Coleman this Saturday,
May 14 ... off 14 Mile Road, east of
Farmington Road, in West Bloomfield
... Name will be Urban Wings.
CONGRATS ... To Rachel Sherman
on her 18th birthday, getting a double
present with graduation from Berkley
High and acceptance to Michigan State
University ... To Allan "the Singing
Window Washer" Schwartz on his 73rd
birthday.
CORRECTED WORD has it that
the former Orleans Grill, etc., on
Orchard Lake Road and Pontiac Trail,
will be a sports bar restaurant ... Its
owner already has a wine bar, Nectar's,
on Orchard Lake Road.
QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT ...
Q "Are the kosher hot dogs cooked the
same way at both Costco and Sam's
Club? They are both good but don't
seem to taste the same."
A. No, the Sinai Kosher hotties at
Costco are steamed, and the Best's
Kosher at Sam's Club are grilled.
