Kennedy's successor, Lyndon B.
Johnson, also made certain that Israel
had military equipment needed to
defend itself. In 1968, Johnson met
with Prime Minister Eshkol and the
United States promptly sold to Israel
Phantom jets, the most sophisticated
and versatile aircraft in the world.
• Israel's first professional artists
organization, the Association of Jewish
Artists, was established in1920 in
Jerusalem.
• In the 1967 Six-Day War, on the
morning of June 5, Israel's still new
and tiny air force attacked airfields in
Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Iraq —
destroying 452 enemy planes in less
than three hours.

Diaspora Support

• Financial support for Israel among
Jews in the diaspora was never so
strong as during the Six-Day War. In
1966, Jews living abroad donated
550,000,000 to Israel. The next year,
that figure increased by ,
$300,000,000.
• Jews from Upper Urfa in southern
Turkey, known as the Urfalis, estab-
lished their first synagogue in Israel in
1904.
• In 1948, when the State of Israel
was established, the Jewish population
in the rural areas was only about
85,000. The vast majority of the Jews
lived in three cities: Tel Aviv, Haifa
and Jerusalem.

• The Maccabi movement of Jewish
athletes was founded in .1895; Israel's
branch of that organization was creat-
ed in 1912, with soccer as the most
popular sport. The first Maccabiah
was held in Israel in 1932.
• The first child to have been raised
in a completely Hebrew-speaking
home in pre-state Israel was Itamar
ben-Avi (1882-1951), son of Eliezer
Ben-Yehuda, the pioneer of modern
Hebrew.
• David Ben-Gurion's friends, the
press and public referred to him as
BG. His staff and longtime party affil-
iates, however, called him HaZaken,
"the old man."
• The land of Israel's first Hebrew
printing press was established in 1841
by Israel Bak. The country's two
largest papers today, Yediot Aharonot
and Maariv, were founded in 1939
and 1947, respectively.
• • The Israel Defense Forces made its
first major arms purchase in 1948
from Czechoslovakia. Israel bought
rifles and fighter planes.
• The first major exhibition in the
State of Israel was the 1953 Conquest
of the Desert International Exhibition
and Fair. More than 500,000 persons
attended the exhibition, which
focused on reclaiming and settling
arid regions. Some 500 organizations
and private groups from Israel and 21
other nations participated in the
event. These included UNESCO, the
Jewish Agency and the International
Labor Office. ❑
